same here This forum always seemed one of the most friendly and helpful forums I've ever seen. Hope that's just a one-time-thing.

Cubi is right. There are some great folks on this forum. Dick and Lyle just to name two. And they are always quick to offer helpful insights and pointers to all questions.

Jordan and Cheryl on the other hand... Cheryl is very talented. Some of her work is just outstanding! I just don't understand her thought process about posting pictures in a thread. She doesn't want anything but her picture in a thread she starts. OK. Then she complains about no comments. After you bitch at everybody, then you want comments? Not going to happen.

Then there's Jordan. Jordan is.... well.... Special. Ever since they let him stop riding the Short Bus, he has been in a space all his own. Sometimes he will post a picture that really causes you to stop and think about the effort that was put forth. But a lot of his pictures look like failed Rorschach test cards. And he is the first to scream about some preceived encroachment of his domain.

In this forum, if you can just appreciate Cheryl for the very gifted artist she is and just ignore Jordan, you will find this to be a pretty useful place. Lots of good talent here and lots of wonderful insights into what you can do with photography.

Can somebody explain to me what the problem with posting a picture in a thread is? Not trying to be offensive, neither ironic, just want to know. Is it because then the picture might get all the attention and not the thread itself? Is it some kind of unwritten rule?

that would be helpful, because most of the forums i've been were very newbies friendly. so easy to understand.
All the rules stated in special thread so that people can read.

and eventhough there is none,
at least no one will make their own rule and start bashing each other..

Have a great day.

Robert, below is an example of a technique that was written up in Photoshop User magazine back in April. Pic #1 is the original. Pic #2 is cleaned up with no power lines, etc. And Pic #3 is after the illustration effect was applied. This technique can be modified quite a bit.

If it looks like something you could use, let me know and I will post the step-by-step.

Please ignore the dirty sensor. Cleaning has been done since then.

I think the Topaz samples I 've seen are spectacular. I don't have Topaz yet so I'll show you two different samples. The first is a picture that has been heavily filtered (maybe too much so) in Photoshop. And I think I used the smudge tool on the whole thing before applying several filters.

And here is one that started as 5 different pictures that were composited in Photoshop and then "just" brushed with the smudge tool.

The second one took a few hours, the first one could have been done in about 30 minutes - and from what I know about Topaz, it might take about 5 minutes to complete something that I like even better. Illustration is such a wide description that a lot of stuff will fit.

Dick.

I have Fractalius, but Topaz Simplify along with Topaz Clean 2 do a better job for illustration. This was done with Topaz Sinmplify 2

"Dick on Aruba" seemed to offer something no one else did an got flamed for it, Really imagine getting the "police action" by adding an image on a photographic thread.

Just a visitor and I'll leave you all to it .. regards

Use topaz all the time for commercial work. Sometimes to make "art" and sometimes just to add something undefinable to a photo. Many times a photo we receive is not perfect, but a Topaz filter of some kind can elevate the image. Adding just a little Topaz clean to a photo that will display on an iPhone makes it show up so much better. Even if it looks overly done on a monitor, looks great on the iPhone. My commercial design portfolio has all been filtered by Topaz to looks it's best on the iPhone. And the above illustration is a good example of clean taken to a full illustrative style. Topaz has really taken off since starting and adds more new techniques all the time.

Pandacat's building illustration post is great. As offered, I would love to hear that technique added in detail on this thread. Nice architectural illustration application.

Good Lord! Please excuse me. It was a mistake.

I usually stay in the Buy & Sell side of tthese forums. Much more open discussions there.

Again, I apologize for intruding.

Hope I don't get bashed around. oh. No, won't be posting any examples.

I use Photoshop filters some times, Topaz filters (Topaz Simplify is a good one for this purpose - but I find that faces often are not well converted) other times. Also, you can work on "smudge" technique. Smudging is more time-consuming, but I like the effect of smoothing out cartoon lines that Topaz will put in.

Have not tried the fractalus plugin but it looks like it might be a good one to have.

Usually I find that you have to work on a picture to prepare it for whichever filter you use, and then touch up the filtered artwork.

I was recently looking for something like this after tinkering with different methods in PS. The Topaz Simplify filter did an amazing job on that photo - wow! Thanks for sharing the images (a thread such as this with images is much more useful than without).
