Hi guys

My first attempt on the MA, I have done a few on WA , but this theme really caught my eye.
Here is my effort of a form of Gymnastics called "Sports Acro" - Involving balances, floor routines and tumbling.

The sports hall we use, has terrible lighting and ugly backgrounds so I used a simple black backdrop and off camera flash for I hope a more dramatic image

Let me know your thoughts - all C & C welcome

Thanks for looking
Regards
Howard.

That's a very impressive act of balance!
I really like the composition on this one,
It does look very nice for a 1flash setup, although maybe one extra, just to seperate the group from the background would really benefit the lighting, I think.

Great entrance!

RT.

Hey RT

Thanks for taking the time to look. I agree with your comment on the seperation aspect.

I actually used 3 flashes for this - I had to fill in the awkward shadows that each gymnast cast over the other. One below camera at low level for middle gymnast, and one either side, left (high) and right at low level. I started with the one on the right from behind as a seperator light (well that was the intention) but it was too concentrated on one gymnast only and I could not get it to illuminate the whole scene as a seperator on all of them.
Any ideas on how this can be achieved with one flash? illuminating quite a large area (3 people), I used a 28mm setting on flash zoom and quite high power 1/4 , but all it did was light up one gymnast - very frustrating for me and the gymnasts who had to keep doing this balance

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks again

Wow, excellent entry (fits the assignment well, and its an outstanding shot!). I love the light, the shadows being cast by the strobes really give the shot a dramatic feel, which fits with the rest of the shot perfectly.

Wonderful capture. Now who would have thought up such a complex positioning?

Wow, what a superb image. Perfect for the theme, beautifully composed and lit, and all-round interesting.

Bill

Thanks for your comments.

There are many balances that the gymnasts can do - even more complex and scary than this - some going 3 to 4 people high!
I end up on a ladder to get the full balance in frame sometimes

Thanks again for looking.

I really love this shot. My daughter is a gymnast and I think she would LOVE to try acro. No gyms around here for it though. I'm a beginner, so I don't really have a critique, but you have my vote!
