I would like to be able to mount a 580EX on the shaft of my monopod for an off camera flash for some high school football. I am more prone to shooting ambient, but you know sometimes a light is handy.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to do this? I am sure I could come up with something, but would really like to make it right. Maybe someone has something I could copy.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can use a simple "L" bracket and a couple of hose clamps from the hardware store .... or .... I use a super clamp with a mini ball head and attach the TTL cord directly to the 1/4" 20 stud on the mini ball head.

You can't go wrong with a Manfrotto Superclamp. Not the lightest thing, but sturdy items seldom are.

Like Butch said, cheap and effective if you want to mount low. There are lots of threads here debating the pros and cons of going low. If you want to go above, a good bracket will be necessary.

Yep Tim ... that'll work ... I used to use that method ... except I had the hot shoe on the bottom to gain a couple more inches of distance from the lens axis ... but after a season of the bracket catching on everything ... even after I covered it with some heat shrink tubing to avoid the sharp edges .... I was annoyed with it ... this year I went with the super clamp and in a couple of turns of the handle, it's all out of the way ...

I use the superclamp.

I have super clamps...just was unsure how to work it right. I had rather go that route due to easy removal.

Just need to figure out how to set it up with the clamp.

Thanks for the ideas...

I use a manfrotto superclamp and a umbrella swivel to mount the flash. Quite heavy but it is solid but detaches quickly for storage or mounting on a railing.

How do you guys/gals shoot? I've only done speedlight on full manual but does anyone use TTL and flash comp? I'm tired of being too hot with flash up close and not enough flash far away.

For KrautFed:

I shoot in ETTL mode all the time:
