I've actually seen Les Stroud bash apart one of his video cameras and use the lens from the wreckage to start a fire - does this count?

yes it does count. and im pretty sure bear grill could start a fire with just about anything, even under water in the north pole.

bear would just check into a hotel and turn on his automatic fireplace. all he does is eat things and drink his own piss. if I wanted to see that, I'm conveniently located 1.5 hours from either NYC or Philly.

les ftw.

UPDATE:

From Canon:

Dear SAM :

We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial examination, we will start the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can expect the repair to be completed and returned back to you within approximately 7 business days* from the date shown above. There is no need to respond to this notice. We love you Sam and want your babies.

~The Canons

Well there it is. I pay nothing. I called them to talk to someone who could help me with why the damage took place and I got nowhere. Oh wells. Of to go shoot some flare. YAY!!

thats making me weary....

me thinks manufacturing defect they refuse to announce yet again (like 5d1 mirror recall). if this becomes common and canon starts to pick and choose who to repair under warranty it can get realll badddd....

I should also mention that I noted to Canon to estimate a repair on my heavily sracthed LCD screen and torn rubber eyepiece. They are repairing both for FREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I Love the Canon.

On a side note CPS, (Canon Prefererd Service) is freaking incredible. $100 a year and it paid for itself the first busted lens. I save 30% on all labor repairs. Saved $83 on my 24L and $63 on my 16-35L. That, AND the fact that I go to the front of the line when repair is needed. If I ship on a Monday, I get it back on Friday. Soooooo goood!!

Sounds like Canon doesn't want to admit an official recall of some sorts.

From people I know in the auto industry, the only reason any recalls are made is this: if the recall is cheaper than the potential lawsuits (calculated total losses) then a manufacturer will issue a recall. If the recall, albeit very dangerous to potential drivers, is small enough that the potential damaging lawsuits is cheaper than the recall, they dont do.

So I guess Canon guesses that a recall would be more damaging than letting leak a potential design flaw to the masses, so they fix quietly for free.
