A news release from the Canon website:

Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera
The PowerShot G-series has long been the flagship of the PowerShot line. The new Canon PowerShot G11 Digital Camera further adds to the legacy of this award-winning series with its advanced features, variety of shooting modes and compatible EOS accessories which help to enhance one's photographic creativity. Designed for those looking for a pocket-sized camera with SLR functionality, this new powerful camera is ideal for the consumer who is looking to capture beautiful landscapes and professional portraits by offering:

A 10.0-Megapixel High Sensitivity System to capture images with a powerful 5x Optical Zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilization. Additionally, a 28mm (equivalent to 28-140 mm) wide-angle lens helps to get large groups into one shot at events such as a family reunion.

A 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor System LCD, new to the G-series, allowing for easier on-camera previewing and reviewing of images from nearly every angle, while still incorporating the optical viewfinder found on previous models.

Easy access to heavily used functions with two mode dials for adjusting ISO and exposure compensation, and a full range of shooting and recording modes, including RAW + JPEG for ultimate creative control when editing images.

A host of optional accessories, including Speedlite flashes, an underwater housing and a tele-converter lens to provide further photographic flexibility.

Scheduled to be available in October, the PowerShot G11 Digital Camera retails for an estimated price of $499.99.

Looks like Canon took 5 MP away, slightly decreased the screen size, added 3 more options for following heads (now 21!) and changed a digit to make it a G11. Now that's progress.

Thanks for the update on my slower update. OK, I see I missed the revival of the swivel screen from the G5 days, and apparently it has HD video. Still don't care. Anyway, there's nothing to see here folks, move along.

Other than two of the things most G9-G10 users wanted,

--not so many megapixels crammed in
--tilt/swivel screen

I'm glad I passed on the G9 and G10; this looks like the camera for me -- unless I go with the new S90!

Don't you just love Canon's pricing, the S90 is $449 at Amazon.com and GBP449 (or currently $727) at Amazon.co.uk!

The G11 is even worse, GBP569 !!

It's a shame that the G11 doesn't get the f/2 speed of the S90.

Would have been great to see GPS included in the G11, like in the Nikon P6000 (Nikon's flagship P&S).

Even at $549, this seems like a good deal. That is what I paid for my G6 many years ago. Based on features, this seems like the "REAL G7" to me.

Even more curious is that the S90 weighs 6.2 ounces, but Amazon sets the shipping weight @ 7 pounds!

Anyway you guys that "waited" for the G11 really missed some shots I got with the G10.

I wonder who's CCD is in there?

Slow Sync Speed : Fastest speed 1/2000 sec
Nice - This will make for some creative shots.

Including the box, charger & manuals that sounds about right.

I'm actually VERY impressed with the G10, in decent light it really is as good as a base dslr for image quality. I much prefer it to my previous G9.

The S90 sounds just the sort of pocket sized cam with RAW I've been waiting for too

Same here on the S90. I was hoping the G11 would get a cmos sensor -i was not impressed by anything the G10 shot above ISO 400; with the likes of the E-P1 and GF1 comming out, the G11 seems a little...misplaced.

I weighed the D10 a comparable P&S with box, charger, manual, etc.
It's still about 5 pounds light, and I'm not talking your money here.

Back to the G11, or the long awaited rehash of features people had, then abruptly had taken away. Isn't this typical of Canon. We had the swivel with the G5 that disappeared until the G11. We had RAW with the G5, then gone with the G7 and back on the G9,10,&11. We had an f2 lens with the G5 which now it reappears on the S90 in 2009. We had the 15MP sensor that was the ultimate in 2008, now crap in 2009. It's like two steps up, three steps back. I'm not buying into this tiny sensor race anymore. We should all own up to hauling a big camera, and no crying of it's inconvenience, just schlep it.

I still dont get why high end compacts cant have bigger sensors? They cant argue the cost as they are not much cheaper than low end DSLR's
Back in the days of film compacts weren't much bigger than DP&S's now (the larger ones anyway) and they used a 35mm film (not that crappy 110 stuff) or the smaller aps film and had fairly decent zoom range too.
