Hi all,

I'm about to upgrade my Canon 40D to a 5D classic. I have the Zeiss 50 f/1.7 and I'm currently using it my 40D.. and I love it, truly an amazing and cheap lens!
Will it work without modifications also on a 5D, or do I need to shave the mirror?

I really don't want to damage my camera, nor the lens...

Thank you!

Andrea

I use one on my 5D with no issues -- generally the issues seem to be with an adapter that is too thin. If the mirror catches on the 5D this is likely the cause and should be remedied by a different adapter. I went through this particular issue with a 2.8/28mm Distagon I had -- adapter too thin. After changing adapters I had no more issues.

The worst thing that can happen is that mirror clearance is hindered by a part of the lens. In my case the 50/1,7 CZ not only works, it is by far the sharpest lens I have used on my 5d. The images are unreal, so clear and sharp.
I have mirror problems with the CZ 35-70/3,4, otherwise a very good zoom lens, but I will have to file it a bit....

No problems here either. I hear the 1.4 provides trouble for some 5D owners at infinity but neither my 1.7 nor my 1.4 have mirror clearance issues.

What kind of adapter are you guys using? With mine, it actually hits the mirror. The mirror goes up, but to make it go down I have to unmount the lens

Any help is very much appreciated!

I had a too-thin cheap ebay adapter and got the occasional catch with an AE type. If I recall correctly, the MM type (identified by green f16 marking) which I had at the same time never caught.

I don't have mine with me but I can check later tonight - both adapter brand and lens version (MM/AE). Mine clears on the 5D2 with no problems. Like Empire said, your adapter may be too thin.

I have just picked up a Contax 50/1.7, and I as well have no interference issues with my 5D2. Nice little lens...

My 5D and C/Y Zeiss 50 1.7 play very nicely together. I have 2 different adapters (1 chipped, 1 not) and have no clearance issues with either.

Thanks all!
Can you please provide links from where you bought the adapters (not chipped)?

Here is an eBay outlet I have used in the past. That reminds me, I need to get a few more.

My adapter is a Photodiox Pro.
That brand of adapter works well with the CZ 28/2.8 as well.
No troubles on my 5D.

Thank you! I'll try with the cheap chinese adapter... if it doesn't work, I'll buy the Photodiox.

How is the infinity calibration with that adapter?

Pretty good as far as I can tell, but I don't really shoot @ infinity wide open, so I suppose it could be off. I am very sure that this was shot with the Yashica DSB 135/2.8 with one of these adapters:

Uuuuuggghhhhhh..... I looked back, and it turns out this image is from my Rokkor. Right before I took this pic I had the DSB on, but I guess I had swapped it. I will try to find something at infinity with one of these adapters for you.
FWIW, it looks to be the exact same adapter that big_is uses, I believe they get them at the same source and simply add the chip.

Edit: Correct image inserted!

That's good to know, I had considered big_is adapters but had no use for the over-priced AF chip. I actually own some old bi_is adapters and I dont think they are infinity correct. Haven't got a hope of remembering which adapters i got from them though

If you go with the fotodiox chipped adapter you may have issues with your 5D battery/power supply. I have two chipped fotodiox pro adapters that will drain my 5D2 power in a second or it may not allow me to fire the shot - just depends on what mood it is in Other times, no problems!!

On my 50/1.7 I have an older fotodiox pro, unchipped. Great fit.

When I needed a little thicker adapter for my 18/4 AE, I went with happypagehk and it works perfectly (and chipped for much less than fotodiox).

Alright, after some digging I found one taken @ infinity with the Yashica DSB 135/2.8 & the ebay adapter. I replaced the wrong images with the appropriate ones above.
