Took these while doing a set of portraits for a buddy. He showed up late so we didn't have any ambient light to work with, but had to get some portraits of him that evening due to a trip. So once we finished the basic portraits his dad wanted (replicas of his ancestors portraits) we did some stuff for fun This was my first set of personal work due to like a month of traveling around with the clothing company I work with taking photos at their events. Enjoyable set for sure.

Lighting set up-

Hi,

I like action shots.

I like your use of the fence as the prop.

I like the way his leg is going over (not just standing there).

The look is good, intense, focused on his target.

Points for making the best of a dark night and simple set.

Well done.

The only thing that catches my eye as a bit odd looking is his expression on his mouth. It kinda looks like he is biting lip (or something like that that gives me a "He is worried" impression). But, it is hard to tell at this size on the net.

I have some more stuff in the works with him involving more normal style portraits in ambient light, I'll post those after I do them. ha

I want you to know I think you did a good job in a challenging circumstance.

Also tell your friend that his "action" shot makes most "cowboy with gun" images look very tame or lame.

I think that creative use of the man and props was a good thing. Keep trying things like that. Control of the light will come with practice, but the underlying images and your concepts are what will make the images stronger and more memorable than any perfectly lit shots.

I like it, too.

For once, here's a photo with a gun as simply a prop, not the focus of the picture or being used as a crutch to prop up (sorry, no pun intended) an otherwise poor photo.

While I realized the pose was just that, a pose, I was surprised to realize, also, that the light seemed perfectly natural and not brought in.

Thanks everyone for your comments. The lighting was particularly difficult since I was turning a pitch black scene into this, but I was able to work around that by bringing my car around and using the headlights as modeling lights
