This Lens has been moved to eBay. Here is the link...

This lens has served me well for two football seasons. This year I plan on using the 400 f/4 DO. I will be trading 1 f-stop for substantial weight savings. The 400 2.8 does not include the lensplate, but it does include the original carrying case, neoprene front lens cover and Canon rear lens cover.

PM's preferred.

Thanks for looking.

Dave

Yes it is. I don't know which year they began to make the V2 of this lens. I have tried to find that out, unsuccessfully. Having said that, I have been quite happy with this lens, with the exception of it's weight (and I doubt the V2 is any lighter ).

Hi Dave.
Would you happen to have any images with exif intact taken with this lens?
I would like to compare them with images taken by my 300 2.8 and a 1.4 TC to see what option would work better. If images tell a good story of sharpness and bokeh I may be interested.

Nope the V2 isnt any lighter, this is the monster truck of long Canon glass.

Thanks,
Rob

According to the Canon Camera museum, the V2 started production in March 1996.

Thanks for that info Ryan, I have wanted to know that for a while now. You are a sleuth and a gentleman!

One of our employees was kind enough to allow me to take some shots of her with my 400 2.8 and 400 DO, over lunch today.

The following images are direct comparisons between the this EF 400 f/2.8 and the EF 400 DO IS at identical aperatures. You will see that the 400 f/2.8 holds up extremely well in comparison. Anyone who is seriously interested in this lens, may request the full size JPEGs with EXIF included. Please don't request copies just out of curiousity if you are not genuinely interested in buying this lens. Thanks, in advance, for your cooperation.

No PP of any kind (hence, no sharpening) has been done to any of these images (except for the night football game images, which were shot in 2008).

These first two images are taken at f/4...

Image #1 with the 400 f/2.8 @ f/4
Image #2 with the 400 DO IS @ f/4

While the above images were taken with a 50D...

The following two images from a night football game in 2008, were taken with the 40D and 400 2.8 WIDE OPEN @ f/2.8

Again, if you are seriously interested in buying this lens, please feel free to request the full size JPEGs with EXIF.

The first six images were uncropped.

Thanks for looking.
