Hi all,
Here's some pics from the Robertstown Rally in South Australia.
The event is a favourite among drivers and is famous for it's big jumps.
This year I found a new spot on one of the stages and this turned out to be the rally photographers holy grail.
Some guys were travelling around about 70ft from take off to landing

4 and 5 are definitely my favorites.

I would have liked to feel the motion of the cars more. Maybe slower shutter speeds and pan a bit. Looking through the gallery the cars are frozen in space and kind of look like they are just hovering there rather than flying through the air. Tough since I'm sure they were hauling through that section.

The rear-view of the cars as they land just doesn't work for me. It leaves me with the impression that I just missed the interesting stuff.

Huge air? This is huge air... (side by side)

Seriously, your shots may have been better received if you caught the cars on the ascent

It looks like the light was pretty flat, tough shooting conditions

It's huge for cars with much shorter suspension travel than your trucks. Just like like a few inches is huge air for an F1 car.

As far as C+C goes...too much rear end. Maybe setting up where you can get the launch? Shoot a little lower as well.

I hate seeing a nice old Z car being abused like that

man that looks like fun!!!!!

I would have much preferred to see the shots from the front of the car, not the rear.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
There were two main reasons I was doing a lot of rear shots -
The first one is that there was another 'tog with me and we both sell images to the competitors so didn't want to basically be getting the same or similar shots.
Secondly, front on is the usual shot that gets taken of jumps. Very rarely do rear shots of jumps get taken, so this was an opportunity to get a different view to normal.

BTW Rags Hef, thanks for your comments too but I wasn't posting these expecting it to turn into a pissing contest.
As Joe said, it is HUGE air for cars that dont have as much suspension travel and are not specifically built for Off Road events. If it's any consoloation, I agree that those pick ups do have bigger air so I s'pose you win that one :-)

Phil

Nice to see a 510 in action. I used to get pretty crazy in mine but never thought of airing it out. Ouch!

Block bottomed out and smashed the hell out of it nothing compares to stadium or off-road truck setups of 3+ feet of cushion. Something(s) came flying off on the landing too.

This guys sure makes a lot of fun looking vids but how would he pit against the real rallye drivers?

As for the OP's photos, i like them and I like the photo showing the OP taking a photo!

love that 510 shot, it is really killer. To the people saying it is small, go for a ride with these guys.

The first two feel really genuine to me. For some reason, I would love to see portraits of the drivers, maybe a photo essay. Could just be the mood of the shot. Dig the flat light.

Instead of asking that question. Ask how would real rallye drivers pit against Block? I think Block has a better chance against real rallye drivers on dirt than real rallye drivers against Block, Gymkhana to be exact... As a note Block has competed against Colin McRae before his untimely passing, and seemed to do well.

Just my $0.02

Forgot to mention, nice Flyin Finn shots!
