Ok, besides missing light shield plates and broken LCD's...

Are there any other problems / issues (minor or big) that I should watch out for when buying a new 5D2?

I am fully recovered from my previous 5D2 experiences (bad ones ) and am ready to try it one more time

Seriously...

Watch they don't turn on you boy.....
These 5DmkII.
Why they appear innocent at first.
You wouldn't even think to give them a second look really.
Few do.
But they are scheming.
And plotting.
And just as you least expect it.
You'd as much wish you'd never been born....
They rise up and rise up fast.
They can think.
These machines.
But not like people.
Not like anyone or anything you've ever known....
You ever looked into the black soulless eye of a great white?
That ain't half as dark.... that ain't half as dark.
What was once your town, well not sure what you'd call it after.
Certainly not a town.
Maybe not even a place.
So yeah, boy, I'd watch your step and keep your distance form these 5DMkII.
There are issues yet to be resolved.
Issued yet to be resolved.

umm yeah so stop worrying and get one again, they are great. the new firmware is awesome too.

(although it sounds like your first tries were more like my crazy script there but hopefully, and almsot certainly, this one should be entirely fine)

Before completely unwrapped check for other people's mucky finger prints - then ask for a new fresh one...

While your in the store you might want to pick up the body and hold it in your hand and check for the infamous "squeaky" compact flash door issue.

I think that is about it though - of course check the camera like you would any new camera, but as far as the 5DmkII goes specifically I don't think you have much to worry about. Very happy with mine 4 months in.

As well, as many people have said, "Thanks Canon!" for the firmware updates. It gives me hope that Canon is listening and getting out of this somewhat dark era of "seemingly" poor quality control and products that are not quite up to expectations.

I bought one on eBay for $16. Seems to work as well as the original.

Ok, thx for the laughs and tips...

I will also look out for the "squeaky" CF door and any AF anomolies.

BTW Is FW 1.1.0 the latest?

Too bad 5D2 prices just went up a bit

No problems with my 5DII at all. Love it.

Obviously it has an old and rather inferior focusing system, but you know that.

Canon quality control is just not good enough though.

Good to hear that David

Yeah, to by-pass the inferior AF I will only use the center AF point and crop to my liking afterwards. That should do the trick... especially since the 5Ds has 21MP's to start with

I will be using the 5D2 mainly for high ISO reportage/wedding work.

Despite what certain people have posted here, in actual pro useage I can happily interchange the 1Ds3 and 5DII and not notice any difference in IQ at all. I think actually the 5DII js rather better at high ISO
