I don't think it's the HDR that's the problem... looks more like he didn't know how to do proper tone mapping in photomatix and he ended up with a surreal effect. yuck.

wow, some subtle HDR would be acceptable. but that just screams PS noob.

I wouldn't use these to sell a house, but I'm a big fan of the surreal look that HDR's can achieve. Maybe if you have the three or so photos that he used, you can try an exposure blend instead to get a more realistic look.
