I've been asked to explore having some sort of external monitor for customers to review an image while on-site. I'm not so sure I'm in favor of this as I fear it will slow down the shoot.... It is intended for outdoor use, no external power. Sports T&I.

My question is: using Canon gear (1D***), when you plug in an external video source, does it kill the rear LCD? If so, is there a CF to allow both displays?

You mean an external video monitor, not source.

But generally the "external monitor for customers" is called a laptop :-) If you want a light and cheap one, buy a netbook.

You can also use a portable DVD player or just a regular monitor if you have a power source. Any monitor with a video port really.

I have a 30D that I am trying to tether to a 22inch Gateway LCD monitor. its a mono plug to RCA (which you usually put into a tv), and then i bought an RCA to VGA adapter.....and its not working :-/, the monitor says its not reading anything. the mono to rca was double checked (it works), RCA to VGA (i have two, don't know, tried both), the camera was on review of a picture with "HOLD" on review time. What's wrong? I don't get it. Is it because it expects a computer to send special signals? and the canon is just too simple for it to read?

Yes it does. I have use a portable DVD play that has video inputs. The resolution is bad. I use a laptop permanantly connected to a camera stand in the studio, its real nice. Sort of like an instant polaroid.
