Was just price shopping for a second SB-80DX. BH says they are discontinued. Anyone have the scoop on this? i.e. what the replacement would/should be. We love this flash.

Edit:
Ok, just found the SB-800 with the "same specs" plus iTTL. Answered my own question... and it only took half the time it usually takes.

I don't have the scoop. However, I have noticed an increase of them on the used market recently. If it has been discontinued, and you really want to get one, I would suggest looking for a used one. I'm sure there will be many hit the used market (like Ebay) as people upgrade to the newer models.

The SB-800DX would probably be the best replacement (maybe only one at this time).

SB-600 is not shipping yet but it replaces the DX50.

The Nikon lineup is SB-50DX, SB-600DX, SB-800DX. Currently only the SB-80DX will be discontinued in favor of the SB-800DX and the SB-50DX will still remain at the bottom of the high-end SpeedLights. The SB-600 was introduced as a middle line flash to offer features such as high speed flash sync support to the D70 and D2H at a reasonable cost. I would imagine that once the warehouse is emptied of the SB-50DX units they may consider dropping it from the lineup. It has not been a great seller so to speak...

FYI, the new SB800 will work essentially like the SB80 on any Nikon body except the D70 or the D2H. In-other-words, you will still get DTTL and any other SB80 function and very close to the same guide numbers. The list price of the 2 flashes new is the same, so you really have no worries one way or the other.

I'm led to believe the SB800DX is full remote iTTL as well all built in if your using multi flash units for outdoor model shoots and so on .
One on camera and as many as 3 in the field .
I'm pretty sure I read that right.. I believe the SB50 shouldn't have the Nikon badge on it

the D2H can control an unlimited number of SB800 speedlites , according to Nikon

John is correct ... the SB-800 enables photographers to fully control up to four groups of SB-800 speedlights wirelessly. This set of four includes one Master Controller and three remote groups – each of which can contain any number of SB-800 speedlights for total lighting control. I sold my SB-80DXs on eBay right after I get the SB-800s - for top dollars.

I am going to keep my SB-80 DX for now, its a good flash.... nothing wrong with it, and it cost me an arm and leg anyhow.
