I hope Canon listens to their customers and doesn't blow it with the 60D...all we ask for it 12-15MP, 1D2 quality AF system, HD video, and decent high ISO performance...the current fps of the 50D would work. I would be willing to pay 2K for this body if they nailed it.

It would actually be cool to see Canon step back to 12MP and focus on image quality and low light performance...but I doubt they will. Instead, they will probably try to cram more MP on the already overcrowded sensor...

So it should be out this fall correct?

Do you expect a reliable answer to a speculative question?

I got a feeling it'll be 15MP gapless microlens sensor mkII. And if Canon sticks to their xxD cycle, it should be announced in August.

This might be better asked at dpreview.com

Might go like the 20D to 30D update: same camera but add enough minor features to rename it (probably HD video) EOS 55D or 60D. I have to say, for an amateur camera design, 50D AF is amazingly good. I've never found it lacking. Anyway, why would Canon put a pro AF system in an amateur body when they have two pro models that already have it? It's not like you don't have choice or opportunity to buy what your really want/need...

There is no way that the 60d gets "pro" AF. I just hope they go away from the silly diamond shape AF layout.

Thank God, I thought I was the only one voicing this opinion. I won't buy a camera simply because it has more megapixels. I will though, drop a wad of dough on a better sensor, say a 12 MP sensor that has less noise, higher dynamic range, & better color and contrast replication. I'm very happy with my 40D, and don't see any reason to upgrade unless the IMAGE quality is better. Don't give us more pixels...Give us better pixels! Are you listening Canon!

"Anyway, why would Canon put a pro AF system in an amateur body when they have two pro models that already have it?"

Why? because technology advances...1D2 AF is a few years old...leave the new AF systems and higher fps for the pro bodies and give us the older "pro" AF system on the 60D

Canon would have to do a serious departure from their past when it comes to this stuff. Canon does not like to put pro features in consumer bodies. If you want pro AF, their suggestion is to buy a pro body. I highly doubt we'll see anything all that much different than the 50D's AF. Canon has a masterplan for their system. If they are going to introduce pro AF into a non pro body, that may be reserved for the 5D mark III to justify maintaining the higher price point.

The new Fiats should have 5-year old Ferrari engines on them too...

The old Lancia Thema did.

When they updated the 5D to the II they left the same AF system, but you think for the more inexpensive model they will go pro?

because we're so cultured here.

I think they could do a mix of the the 5d2 and the 40/50D systems. IE all 9 cross points but with the assist points round the center. (which is what they should have done on the 5d2)

Wow! You're speaking for all of us now? I didn't get that memo.

(Seriously - don't try and pass yourself off as the Voice Of The Silent Majority - you ain't, and neither is anyone else).

All me asks for is 10-12 mp, no video whatsoever, the ability to set the AF re-acquisition seek time, and to AF natively at f/8.

Not very much like your list, is it?

In my 40D I've got good AF, and the changes above would make it perfect for me (I couldn't give a stuff about 45 or 51 AF points - I've yet to miss a bird shot I could blame on a lack of AF points, although I wouldn't say no to Ian's idea), and - because I expose reasonably well and convert/process carefully and effectively - I've got decent (no, good) high ISO performance.

The changes above in a 40D would make it near-enough perfect for my purposes.

Yeah, I guess some of you are right....I guess technology advancement is non applicable when we're talking about computer chips, sensors, and AF systems....! hahahaaha This is classic! Thanks for the laughs.

And if Brazil boy thinks a 40D/50D is a fiat compared to a 1D2 "ferrari" he's clueless...I've owned both and a 40D can achieve the exact same results (if not better in some cases less a few fps) in the right hands.

Maybe I'll go buy some 1D's since they are "pro" bodies and will never be surpassed by "prosumer" technology.

That's just the thing... except for a few folks on this board (and maybe dpreview), most people seem to really love both the 40D and the 50D. Have you checked the 50D customer reviews on the B&H web site lately? Hardly evidence that Canon has "blown it".

How about 15mp with lower noise? Or are there just too many people that are anti-15mp?

They'll change their tune. I bet a lot of people were against the 12MP sensor too when the XSi was announced, probably said something along the line of "...shoulda kept it 10MP and improve the noise/DR/etc..."

I'm all for it...not against 15MP at all, but I would take less MP if image quality/noise is better.
