Out of curiosity, has anyone tried e-mailing Guardian? If he doesn't look at the forum regularly and has it set not to email him when there is a PM to him, he won't know about the PMs for awhile. If his email address is current in the forum registration, he will receive the email immediately.

Of course, he may not check his email regularly either.

Just a suggestion.

Good suggestion.
Want to go for it?
I'm thinking he will probably need to know that there are a significant nuimber of FM'ers requesting the sticky. The more voices, the better.

I'm not a great choice to do this, since I've never posted a B&W image to the forum... well maybe that makes me a better choice, since I have a huge amount to learn. I will email him today.

We should just flood him with emails, or maybe shoot a PM to Fred Miranda

Some great workflow ideas.
I mainly use Capture Nx and once in a while I use Lightroom.
Save my files in .nef and than the ones I use for the web I save it as .jpg as well.

Interesting - as an NX user also, do you use any 'sets' that are broadly applicable?

Which conversion workflow do you use? I'd like to pick your brain for everything NX - marvel at your work & site.

Thanks,

Bob

I use the regular conversion a lot, but for sepia toning I use the Color Overlay setting with a dark sepia color and adjust the opacity as needed.
I do save my settings, but they are usually just a starting point.
You can have a nice effect as well if you do some blurring of your image and set the blending mode to Overlay ( again adjust Opacity as needed)
If you want I can send you some of my settings.

It seems that the moderator here is now Fred himself. Has anyone emailed him to request making this thread sticky? If not I will do so.

I didnt notice the change in moderators.
I will email him, but I think its best that a number of people do, to demonstrate the level of interest. In fact, I will create a poll.

I thought it would be nice to share our B/W workflows here after being inspired by Alan showing his B/W HDR workflow. I guess I'll get the ball rolling (or continue it):

1. Always shoot in RAW
2. Import photos in Lightroom 2
3. Look at what photos I like, then open it in Photoshop CS3's Raw Processor.
4. Add vignetting, sharpening, toning (if i want to), as well as clarity, contrast, etc.
5. Adjust tones of B/W by turning it to greyscale and adjusting specific color channel levels. (Adjust until it looks good to my eyes).
6. Open in CS3 and further add contrast, adjust shadows/highlights.
7. Sharpen using USM at settings at around 1.5 radius and 60-70%.
8. Export to web by resizing with bicubic sharpening.
9. Re-sharpen by using radius of around .5 and 50-60%

Side note: A method I like to use to make B/W's pop more in Photoshop is the following:
1. Taking an image and making a duplicate layer of it.
2. Then I choose the top level and change it to "Overlay" mode.
3. Go to the shadows/highlights mode and then add shadows to 90-100% with highlights at around 10-20%.
*You can change the opacity of the top layer to decrease contrast.

I've been using a similar flow in ACR. I like being able to fiddle with white balance after converting to gray scale. I do any vignetting, dodging and burning etc. in CS3. I 'll have to try your method for adding pop. I do it little different. With the duplicate layer set blending mode to multiply and apply a high pass filter at 50-250 pixels. Adjust brightness if necessary and adjust opacity.

Thanks for starting this thread. As time goes by, I'll try as much as I can of what's posted here. I add my vote to sticky this thread.
