You asked this to the right person. I travel to Mexico on December 2007 with the purpose of shooting arquitecture, culture and colors.
Since I new it was probably a rugged ride, I took my backup camera Canon XTI and my work horse lens Canon 17-85 IS lens. (I was afraid to risk the 40D with 15-55 2.8 IS lens)
The Canon 17-85 IS lens has the perfect zoom range for this trip, and 17 mm wide is perfect for architecture. I took around 3000 shots.
I recommend that someone who lives in Mexico give you the ride where you want to go. I would not travel alone.
1) MEXICO CITY, El Zocalo (La Catedral), Museo Nacional de Antropologia and El palacio de Chapultepec. Also take the Turibus.
2) QUERETARO, Nice plazas and churches.
3) SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE. Beautiful, color for photography.
4) TAXCO. White town.
5) TEHOTIHUACAN.
6) GUANAJUATO Excellent.
Wide angle and image stabilization is a must. Night photography with no flash is very interesting in Mexico. Towns are very colorful. A lot of cables on the roofs crossing the streets.
