It's got a good reputation for such a long range. The only thing really similar is Canon's 18-200 IS.
I'd still recommend buying a pair of shorter, optically superior lenses instead, ultra-long range zooms are always compromises in design and the 50D's sensor outresolves many consumer lenses as it is. A good option would be to pair the excellent Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 Macro with the Canon 50-250 IS. You lose IS on the short end, but the Sigma is otherwise excellent and in that range IS is less useful.
Frankly, I'd also recommend buying the 40D over the 50D. The upgrades on the 50D are in actual fact marginal unless you're using the best lenses available.
