Has anyone tested/compared the new Zeiss canon mount 21mm ZE lense against the lengendary 21mm Contax/Zeiss version with Canon adapter ?

I am curious how much my contax/zeiss version will drop in price, especially if the new Zeiss is as good, if not better....TIA

I do not think they are out yet. But, something many want to know.

The MTFs (which are typically very reliable from Zeiss) indicate that the new one will be significantly better.

I'm wondering what Zeisss strategy is. They seem to be releasing revised lenses in some focal lengths and retaining the Contax designs in the others (50/1.4 85/1.4).

Can any improvement be done in 50mm and 85mm (and even 135mm too, to some extent) focal length... Easiest to design...

Below 40mm, its all retro focus designs... with new design techniques and material sciences, you will keep seeing improvement... but in rangefinder, (I havent used any yet) it may be peaking there already...

In my opinion, yes, there is plenty of room for improvement.

$1700 or so, I think.

I'll give you $800 for your Contax, though, so no worries.

You might want to look at the original thread here on this comparison:

I'd agree, with the caveat that said improvement will require either more complex designs or use of exotic elements (a la the Sigma 50/1.4, Canon 50L, Summilux Asph)

So, no deal then? You might regret that in 6 months.

Nah, I doubt the quality improvement if any will be that decernible. If the new sells at $1700, well my copy, at least to me will be worth that much...even though I paid $2,900 2 years ago....

The Euro has dropped against the dollar, so it might be less expensive in the U.S.

I wonder how much this one is going for... I never thought the Distagon 21 would go under 1000$ one day!

Anyone know when we'll see the new version hit the store shelves?

Thanks for the overlay Dan...looks like significant improvement in most areas. But there may be more CA...

I wonder what the distortion will be like...
