Hi ....I've been reading for a long time about "diffusion sock" for Elinchrom beauty dishes.
I have an E beauty dish kit (2 deflectors, silver & gold) but there was no mention of a sock with it.

I checked the Elinchrom site and there is no mention of these socks.

What do you all do, strech your pantyhose or Argyle socks over the BD?

I'm really curious.............TIA

go to b&h site and enter elinchrom diffuser in the search box...you should fine one for the 17" and 27" reflectors.

Why do you want a sock?

All a sock does is turn a beauty dish into a softbox. Kills the beauty dish look, maybe thats why Elinchrom doesn't sell one.

Did you also notice that Elinchrom doesn't have grids for their beauty dish? Wonder why?

Elinchrom does sell a sock, I have one, and it's awesome when I'm on location and I don't want to setup a similar sized softbox, or it's too windy to have a softbox up. Very handy. I love mine

Cheers,
Thomas

Are you implying that gridding a BD is a bad thing? You're on your own there.

Thomas all I can go by is the Elinchrom Catalog http://www.elinchrom.com/Downloads/Literature/Light%20Ahead/The%20Light%20Ahead-EnglishBD.pdf and this catalog from their US importer Bogen Imageing http://www.bogenimaging.us/webdav/site/bius/shared/literature/elinchrom.pdf neither show a sock for the Softlite reflectors (beauty dish).

I'm not saying that you don't have a sock, just that someone other than Elinchrom made it. Unless it is a non-catalog item.

No I'm not.

Profoto makes both a sock and a grid.

Hensel makes a sock, a grid to replace the deflector and two different grids for the entire dish. One of these days I'll get a Hensel and put a Profoto mount on it.

Mola makes a sock, but no grid. But Light Tools makes grids for Mola http://www.lighttools.com/subgrouping.htm?cat=25598 so there must be a demand for them.

But Elinchrom catalogs neither a sock or a grid. Hence my question, I wonder why Elinchrom doesn't make a grid. Or for that matter a sock, like most other manufactuers, because there seems to be a demand for them.

There are a few grids that work on most 22'' dishes. And for the 27'' or the larger Molas, you can always velcro an octa grid on them.

I believe these also fit Mola Demi dishes:

For about $50 you can easily make one. The ones I made were pretty haphazard but function without flaw.

$5 or $50? PCB sells them for a 22'' dish for $10. I've got it, it's decent. Definitely not worth the time to make your own unless you need it for a larger dish. Last time I tried using a sewing machine, it sure wasn't as pretty as your results.

if you search b&h as i indicated in the second post in this thread, using "elinchrom diffuser", among the results are two elinchrom branded socks...one for the 17 inch minisoft and one for the 27" maxisoft.....

And an example of the dish with the sock:

Here's the link to B & H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?ci=0&shs=elinchrom+26235&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=jsp%2FRootPage.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&Go.x=6&Go.y=6

So I stand corrected.

My question is why neither Elinchrom or their importer Bogen Imageing had it in their catalogs?

Now can you find grids for the Elinchrom 27" Softlite? Many would be grateful.

That's weird re B&H site, as provided by c.d.embrey above.
When clicking on "more info" the features of the sock is not the features of the "sock" but that of the parabolic reflector itself with the 2 deflectors.

WEIRD!!!

If someone has a sock, good, and thx for the photo, Tomagado, I am a believer now.
Still, http://www.elinchrom.com/ itself DOES NOT list any diffuser (sock?) for the BD. http://www.elinchrom.com/

B&H has glitches like that sometimes, it happens, but the sock does exist. I got mine from Amazon because I had a trial membership for free 2Day air, so that's just another place to get it.

Here is the 17" version, with a pic to boot.

http://www.amazon.com/Elinchrom-EL-26232-Diffuser-Reflector/dp/B000QCLX4O/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1228112168&sr=8-10

I doubt there is a grid for it, but it would be a welcome surprise if there were.

Cheers,
Thomas

Mine fit as flat and tight as a snare drum.

Haven't found grids for the Softlites, but I have a couple of their 17" Square reflectors with the 30º grid. Awesome modifier. Very versatile. With the minisoft deflector it is a white BD. Love it. I use mine more than my BD.

Good luck

A believer in what? That you can get the octaboxish look with a beauty dish? Its a fine photo, but it does *not* have the beauty dish feel at all. I may be abnormal, but all my dishes are either bare or gridded, I never put a sock on. (Profoto and Hensel Dishes for the curious)
