Just got an email from my Canon dealer saying that his Canon rep has told him that the UK is going to recieve only 2000 in the first batch [only 20% of their original order due to high demand], apparantly they are in that high demand that internet dealers are NOT recieving ANY in the first batch of 2000................please don't shoot the messenger here, just passing on what he told me & he's usually spot on!

I doubt thats accurate but if it is....Then there are going to be a hell of a lot of pissed off people come next Monday.

Myself included although I dont really mind if they dont get here in time I will get a 1dmk3 instead

I am not sure how you differential "internet dealer".

I know it is not the UK, though all sell there,, but how would you define B&H, Adorama, Amazon. Two out of three have physical retail operations, but all are primarily internet.

I see your point, I would imagine that here in the UK internet dealers would be the likes of Amazon maybe? We don't have the superb stores you guys have in the USA

i really hope you're not referring to play.com (yep thats why i preordered from...) oh well still hoping that one of the HK shops will do a NO VAT auction...

I ordered from Play.com but they then told me that my card wouldnt accept orders of over £1500 and said it was a bank issue. I then contacted my bank and they said that they (play.com) will be asked for further authorisation before a purchase of that size is made but every store should be able to ring their "merchants" number and do this. However after speaking to play and their accounting department it looks like they cant.

Therefore its unlikely that I will be getting one from them afterall. Shame but a simple thing like a phone call is out of reach of some companies....

I was told that my address didnt match the one on my card (which is identical). Called up, complained was passed to someone who seemed to know what she's doing and she 'approved' this transaction - i'm still holding my breath for some hiccup to come up when they actually charge it...

I wouldn't be surprised, initial deliveries of the 1D Mark 3 were small amounts but fairly regular deliveries.

If the UK is sent only 2000 units then I can see the first ones goning for quite a premium. unless as Alistair says the they come in regular deliveries after that.

Anyone buying a 5D II at the release price is getting shafted if you ask me.

I know that the £ isn't now as strong vs the dollar as it was but £2300 vs $2600 is taking the piss from Canon UK. When these prices were announced we were at £1= $1.91, so we were effectively being asked to pay nearly double the US release price.

Before anyone makes excuses for Canon, try £2300 vs $3800 with current 1Dmk3 prices. Once a product has been out there for a year or so the prices US vs UK seem to level out considerably.

The release pricing for the 200/f2 was similarly vicious for the UK market (about $9000 effectively, at £4500). I still love my Canon gear, but they can count me out of early adopting while they rip us off so badly in the UK.

Nikon do seem a lot more reasonable with the US/UK thing. The price is a bit higher, in line with what you would expect with the whole import/VAT/higher wages thing. Canon just have a lot of chutzpa.

That said, with the lowering of the VAT here to 15% do you think we will actually see the difference in the shops or at the pumps? Not likely, sigh...

You are looking at 10% duty + VAT - and both of those are added to the postage charge too.

So a £500 lens become £700 very quickly....

Not to mention the £8 that Royal Mail will charge you for just collecting the payment from you

However i was told by DigitalRev that if i buy off its website and pay tax there then i wont pay when the item is delivered. Ever tried this method?

Digitalrev: if they have the kit in stock it will probably be in HK. I dont know if I would woont to risk it with the UK customs, trying to convince them the its already paid. + it wil be an import body so wont have euro warranty (only lens have worldwide).

If play.com dont want to release the info does that mean that have no stock and dont know when they will get it?

That is not correct. You can only pay UK taxes to the UK customs dept.

What some HK dealers promise is that they will refund you any tax you have to pay - presumably meaning that they have learnt how to get their stuff past customs without paying - declaring it as having little or no value etc

You'd think I'd spent ages thinking about the cheapest way to get hold of shiny new gear wouldn't you?

Ok just got off the phone with digital rev, basically what happens when you order from ebay and from their website are 2 different things. On the website you get charged tax by them and they will pay tax on your behalf when it enters the country. On ebay you're on your own and have to pay whatever the amount you're charged.

So i bit the bullet and ordered it from there - expected delivery date to my grubby paws is 2nd december. Way overpriced i know but its the only way i could get this in time for Xmas - if you dont have a preorder, the earliest i found is february 2009.

On a side note what is the price that 24-105mm lenses sell for (taken out of kit unused).
