I'd like to know what the current state of art timings are for Convert/Save function from RAW files to TIFF file

If you would be kind enough to time such a function please list the file size, the CPU, and how much RAM you've got... I don't mind the wait put to me by my old dog of a pc, as I'm not in a hurry these days, but still, I'm curious just how much shorter my life has become waiting...

as a baseline:
file size: 14.6mg (I used this large size from my 30D as many of you will probably have even larger files out of more pixels)
CPU: P4, 2.53ghz
RAM: 1.5gb
Time: 18 sec.

Thank you for indulging my curiosity...

Gil...impressive...nice to see a simple dual core CPU will perform so well...
is your pc typically set up with so much (90%) RAM usable?

12.2mb RAW file converted and saved as a 16 bit tiff in 7 seconds. Just an old laptop here with a core duo at 2.4mhz? and 3 gigs of ram.

Yes, it has been that way since I put the extra two stick in. It's a laptop by the way but I am sure my main (XP Pro) computer is just as fast. That was a 16 bit tiff in CS4 with 32 bit Vista.
I have very little running (5 or 6 necessary items I believe) in the background on both computers and believe that is what has always given me good speed with PS and LR.

12.49 mb Raw file converted and saved as a 16 bit tiff pretty much instantaneously.

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz
4GBs of RAM
Vista Ultimate 64 bit
Photoshop CS4 64 bit

Isn't it converting the raw when you open the image in ACR? So this would be a test of disk write speeds?
I tried a 13.6 Mb raw file and the time to save 16 bit tiff was about 7 secs on MacBook with 1Gb Ram and 1.5 secs on Mac Pro with 10Gb Ram.

I've been wondering also what Raw to Tiff converter you're using for this test. I suspect that different converters have different speeds. Also, as Andrewd01 pointed out, if using ACR, what do you time (the time it takes to open the file in ACR, the time to save the file, etc.)?

Sorry everyone...I should have entered that as another variable...
I was using the latest version of DPP...

In PhotoShop6, few operations take more than 3-5 seconds, so upgrading a PC for PS6 didn't seem cost effective...it's only the 15-18 second C/S from DPP that's kind of a drag...

I'd been putting off getting a new pc...my 5-yr old VAIO (2.4ghz/1gbRAM) still does the job it was bought for, recording TV and burning DVDs (I only needed to upgrade the DVD/RW burner, from 2x to 22x, to reduce burn time from 12min to 3.5 min....a real time saver!!!)...

...holding my breath for Vista's replacement, I bought a used P4 ($30 + $10 for a gig stick of RAM for 1.5gb) strictly for photo and web use...limiting the VAIO's sole task to DVR has improved both PC's performance...not a single, dual-core cpu PC perhaps, but two single core PCs... was my bargain basement, temporary fix...

...but the results I'm seeing here, and the reasonable prices of dual core PCs has me thinking that this holiday season I may have to do some bargain hunting.

Thanks for your input everyone...
