Hey friends,

I have been assisting for a photographer that just recently moved to LA named Dave. I have been learning a lot about lighting and ideas, but I'm still struggling in the post process department. Dave was nice enough to give me some raw shots from the shoot and take a photo of me.

I had the background, two soldiers and the photo of me. This is the composite that I made out of it with my take on the post process.

what do you think?

Rian

I think you're about ready to kill your point man. Other than that...what fun!

+1 on the point man observation above.

My Simple Suggestions: The Pyramids don't fit.

I hope that helps.

Yea....I usually like your posts but the pyramids def do not fit...and Osama is not from Egypt. He was born in Saudi Arabia, please do not get that confused. I do not mean to sound harsh but my original citizenship is from Egypt and I hate to see things get mixed up here.

I can get past the pyramids and even the fact that you are going to shoot your point man, but the yellow pants are the true killer for me!
Great job, it's worlds beyond what I can do.

Agree about the point man, but I like the image.

And who says Bin Laden's not in Cairo! I heard he was in Dubai a couple of months ago getting his teeth fixed, apparently everyone knew he was there.

I know there's been financial meltdown lately but isn't the reward for him slightly higher than $2,500?

I like the image too. What struck me here is your comment about "struggling with PP".
I guess it is all relative. Many here would love to have your PP ability.

Another observation: Two soldiers are aiming their weapons while you are hip shooting in a very casual (safety standpoint as well as well as accuracy) non-professional way.

Bin Laden is loooong dead - that's been confirmed - but anyway I think you did a great job cutting in and matching up the elements. It looks like 3-point and it's all matching up. Nice!

Kinda ruins the "shot" when you're about to waste one of your team mates.

Looks good. I don't know that I could do it so take this with a grain of salt. The only thing I see is a slight halo around your head... maybe on in parts. if it were bigger it might be more noticeable.

You are lucky to get to work with Dave and you work is inspiring on it's own.

Looks like at least an F-86 Sabre, but maybe it's a Mig.

For your lighting, do you tend to shot with on light to each side and a general fill from the front?

thanks

steve

Hey steve. there were a lot of lights in this one.

1. key light in the front from to the light front.
2. ring light on camera
3. back light out the door (where the pyramid is now)
4. back light to the right rear
5. hair light mounted on the ceiling about our heads shooting down

haha

All things considered it would be a better shot without the soldiers, just your fine self blazing away through the doorway.

The problem is one of context. You are playing soldier with those depicted as doing the real thing. They are likely models doing the same, but are dressed for the part and the correct branch of service. Yours is more of an "Old Navy" look than new army.

Lose the pyramids and the other guys, up the reward on the poster to 25 million, and you'll have a simpler and more effective message: given the opportunity you'd shoot the SOB! vs Rian playing soldier.
