Wow really cool stuff one because there is a crap load of stuff jammed in there and the other i used to own a 17-85 myself so it's just cool knowing now what goes inside one of these.

I'd like to see a 70-200 2.8 IS next!

Here's the 70-200 IS! (not mine)

OP: Very cool! It is very interesting to see the inside of that lens.

great thread (sorry about the lens though)

On the topic of pen holders, I found this at Canon Australia's Melbourne Office:

Better yet, send it to Canon and claim "I was just taking a few architectural shots when I ended up with THIS!"

Perhaps this was just a case of "Aperture Envy" where the lens felt inadequate compared to the aperture capabilities of the building..??

Nice job documenting the dissection... and you got a cool pencil holder to boot!

I am very surprised I have not seen images of this building on photography sites before.
somewhere on that design team there is a serious photographer.

I guess that answers the question of why Canon doesn't offer do-it-yourself lens kits.

did you try banging it with a hammer before you took it apart? That's what I always do, works a lot of the time

Cool, thanks for sharing. I used to own a 17-85 and it is nice to know what's inside it. Thanks.

I have a 17-40 L lens that has been inoperable for years because of err99. Wonder if this is a good second candidate?

Can i just say thank you to all the members that posted a reply with helpful advise.

ESP about the hammer banging technique. I used an adapted technique to my non-working lens its called the "bang on the table technique"

Basically,
I have a spare 80-200mm kit lens that did not work and kept giving me err99. The error occurs the moment i turn down the focal point.

So taking the advice from that thread... i banged it on a table... and it works now...

I thought it was a lost cause.

Once again thank you.

Very entertaining post.
When you look at the lens exploded like that, I figure that in it there is..

* $10 worth of rings and tubes.
* $20 worth of electronics.
* $40 worth of glass.
(Canon's cost)

Agreed. And is it just me, or is there a lot less glass in there than would be expected?

I love to take things apart and see how they are made and work. Now you've got me going but the only problem is all my lenses are working fine!

Really cool thread - thanks for sharing!
