Hi,

I have a 5DMKII on pre-order, but am wondering if I should change to the kit with the 24-105. I have a Tamron 28-75 which is nice and sharp on my 5D, but the 24-105 is nice range + IS + USM. Also, if not the 24-105, what other zoom in a similar range would be a good match for the 5DMKII (or a 1DSMK3)?

The 24-105 is a fabulous walkaround lens. I'd go with the kit. The other walkaround is a 24-70, but I find it too heavy and cumbersome, and the hood is ridiculous. Considering you get the 24-105 for $800 more than the body itself, I'd definitely go with the kit. If you end up not liking the lens, it's an easy sell.

If you can live with the f/4 aperture, get the 24-105L kit. If you don't like the lens, you can always sell it without much loss.

Resale value of kits are oftentimes less than their actual price and closer to their kit price due to their abundance and the kit price most of them originated from.

Don`t get the kit lens. You already have the Tamron. For that money, I would get one fast L prime. 135 L is AMAZING!

The 5D goes for $2199 at B&H
The 5D/24-105 kit goes for $2899 at B&H
meaning you are buying the 24-105 for $700

The 5D MKII goes for $2699 at B&H
The 5D MKII/24-105 kit goes for $3499 at B&H
meaning you are buying the 24-105 for $800

Not sure why Canon would elect to charge you $100 more for 24-105L when it is in the 5D MKII kit than if you would buy it in the 5D kit.

Honestly, if it were me I would pick up the 24-105L. You are buing a $2700 camera and putting a $300 lens on it. Yes, I can buy a $60K Corvette, and I'm not going to put my tires from my minivan on it because they would fit. I think the 24-105L would be a great step up for you.

the 24-105 F4 L would be my reccommendation, it's an absolutely fantastic lens, and pretty light too, making it a great walkaround lens. I don't have any experience with the non-L version (didn't even know there was one).

I would never go for the kit, but then again, I prefer lenses faster than f/2, 2.8 is kind of my limit of slowness, I would die if f/4 was my only option :P but I guess that is a matter of taste and use. I would very much prefer the 50 1.4 (sigma or canon) over the 24-105, not as versatile, but lighter and more practical that way

Wait until you start using the camera before you start getting more glass for it.. YMMV

Definitely get the kit. It's an extra $800 bucks for a $1050 lens. If you don't like it, you can easily sell it for more than you bought it for.

I think it has more to do with B&H, then Canon, but it is still cheaper then the Lens by itself. What until after Christmas, and I bet you see some change in pricing.

The 24-105 is great and certainly worth $800 new. However, if you're happy with your current zoom, you should consider some nice primes. The 24L, 35L, 50L, 85L, 135L, Sigma 50/1.4, Canon 85/1.8, ZE 85/1.4, ZE 50/1.4, ZE 35/2, etc. could all be great choices depending on what you shoot. Of course the ZE lenses aren't available yet, but neither is the 5DII.

What are the resale values of a new 24-105? Would it be wise just to buy the kit and sell the lens right away?

My plans is to purchase the 5D2 (w/ or w/o the kit) and purchase a new 24-70. I don't need the extra zoom, and would prefer the speed.

Do a search and you can get a better feel for the going price. If you buy the kit and the lens is $800 and you want to sell it, figure shipping and some fees might run in the range of $40-$60. You'd have to start at about $900 and drop down from there just to break even. New ones at B&H are going for $1,060.

I did exactly that when the 5D was first released, meant that the camera didn't depreciate for a year or so relative to what I paid for it. More than that, I paid for it in just 3 weeks of commercial work profits.

I always preferred the 24-70/2.8 to the 24-105, to me, at least with this focal length, aperture trumps IS, f4 and the additional range.

5D Mk IIs are going to be scarce. Your dealer will have more kits than bodies at some point so you may get your camera faster that way.

Thanks for all the replies.

Right now I am leaning toward just leaving the order at body only. It looks like I could get a used 24-105 for $800 or so on the B&S forum. Also, I am concerned that the 21 MP sensor will magnify any issues with the lens. Perhaps I will just add a 135L to my kit.

Does anyone know how that lens with the 1DsMK3?

The hood may be large but it is especially effiicient due to the 'reverse' nature of the 24-70L's design. It's deep when you need it to be and vice versa

'Ridiculous' in your opinion, to me it does it's job well

At present there doesn't seem much saving in buying the 24-105 kit, but that will probably change

Why get a used one for $800 if you can get a brand new one with a warranty for the same price?

I am concerned about the quality of the lens with the 21 MP sensor and it is f4. I will wait to see raw samples of the lens on the 5DMK2 before deciding.
