Guys,
Those of you who predict value drops correctly....could you tell me what a used 5D will cost around christmas time ? And maybe, next march ? Anyone thing it will go for under $1k anytime soon ?

Tx,

Obviously the prices will trend downwards, but I don't think you'll see a 5D in good condition sell for <$1k this year or for at least the first half of '09. I've seen well-worn ones selling right now in the $1300 range, but nice ones are still ~$1500 or more. What distinguishes the 5D from most other used bodies (and boosts its value) is its still "best" image quality, and it remains to be seen if the new 5DII will surpass it by much.

Alternatively, the value of used 5D bodies may rise if 5D2 comes up with 1D3 like problems.

I see current 5D in the range of 1200-1700. Most mint 5D under 2000 shots is around 1350. If 50D IQ surpass 5D IQ then we will see a big drop in a month or two.

I see prices for 2nd hand 5D's now dropping to € 800,- (body only) here in the Netherlands. I think this will be the common price around christmas time unless there is still a huge backordering of 5D MKII's.

By march 2009 I expect it to hit the < €600,- mark.

I been following the prices on the 5D, it seems they are hanging around the $1,500 range for a "Mint Body". A few are dropping to the $1,350 level, but not most. New 5D's are still available for about $2,100, the mint used ones are about 30% off the new price. Once the new 5D's are gone and the 5DmkII hit the $2,250 range you might see the original 5D around $1,000, I think you will see that in about a year, just my opinion.

It won't. Some will rave about the IQ differences but they will not be noticeable in print. The price at Xmas will be $1200 for a low click good condition 5D and will move to a grand within 6 months.

take the dof out of the loop and count the 14bits and gapless filters, i think 50D might close the IQ gap between 5D and 1.6 crop. if this was the case then 5D is no longer in demand list.

I cant believe how often these threads get posted.

And I can't believe how many people want a crop cam to 'beat' a FF cam. It just isnt the same thing - they use different 'film'

Nonetheless, I certainly think the 5D can not avoid $1100-1200 by Christmas. Hell, with a rebate the MkII will be $2200, right?

Now when a 1DsII gets to be $2200, I will be a happy camper.

I listed my low click 5D and got an offer of $1550.00. I pulled the sale after reading about possible soft images and no improved AF. Why sell a camera that delivers? Who cares where the price goes....

Yeah I hate these threads too because they always give me false hope I can afford one

I'm never selling my 5D. Hell, I'm never selling my 10D!

You are so correct.

I actually like threads like these; it reminds me that I'm not the only sucker lusting over the 5D (and the 10D for that matter)! (I'm dying to pick up a 2nd body to go with my 30D). I'm price watchin' like a hawk -- waiting for, if not expecting, mint condition ones to reach $1200 around next spring. (Maybe this is more hope than prediction -- but hope, not $$$$, is all I have right now). Keep hope alive folks!

Or, the cost of a can of soup if the bailout fails...

Now why would you say something like that? 14 bits and "gapless microlenses" aren't the whole story behind IQ. I can safely say that the 5D will remain a classic - a desirable classic no less.

i just state the buyer's mind to compensate the future 5D cost, but it was not a statement of a crop sensor believer and ofcourse, nothing replaces FF
