Hmmm..... If the point of this post was to show that IQ is very close, it did just the opposite for me. It looks like a marked improvement in resolution to me.

Mike

No, just a bit of back focus on the right (40D). The background on the right (40D) is sharper. The nose on the left (50D) is sharper. If the focus was exactly the same on both cameras, the resolution edge of the 50D will be less than seen here.

If you draw a straight line between the left side of the mouth to the blue emblem on the cap, you cross an orange zone just below the cap. That part of the face is perhaps 1/3 way from the nose to the background. That orange area looks slightly sharper to me on the 40D.

Anyway, differences will not be noticeble in prints, unless you print really, really, really big

Slight increase in ISO noise also a plus.

Why is that?

Thanks for voting and commenting everybody

I guess for most people it boils down to: are the extra 50D features worth almost twice the money you pay for a 40D? The majority doesn't seem to think it does. At least for now... Maybe that will change when 50D images and positive reviews/user reports will flood the internet... and when prices are coming down (fast)

why is switching to nikon always an option in these polls, instead of other rather reasonable options? for example, here, it's either buy a 50D, don't buy a 50D, or switch to nikon... before the switch-to-nikon option, what about buy another 40D, buy a 5DII etc... =)

I agree with this statement...

look at Amazon and the single item page, they have a list of things that "people who looked at this item also looked at..."

1) The purpose of the poll was/is to see how many people were/are interested in buying a 50D. NOT how many people were interested in buying a 40D, 5D2, D700, etc...

2) There is no mentioning of "switching to Nikon" in the poll

3) This is not Amazon... Nor the B&S forum... Just a poll, no selling going on here

Not yet Tempting, but I'm still very happy with the IQ of my 20D (and 5D) pics ... for approx the same amount of money, I guess, I might go for the HG 21 camcorder instead

Well said. Of course it was your poll, I think a clear subject was stated in the title, and if you got the information you wanted then it's perfect. My rambling was just kinda throwing out some ideas for others to think of in the future if they so desire. I should have added that line.

Please accept my apologies if it appears that I was criticizing this poll, because I am one of the people that participated and voted for item #1. I am going to get this camera because I believe it's a significant upgrade over the 40D (which I currently own two) even if the autofocus and high ISO perform similarly. So I will get one 50D and keep one 40D for backup/2nd fiddle work.

Accepted

I hope you will enjoy your 50D... And please report back to share your experiences when you got it

I think 20D/30D to 50D is a good upgrade and many will do that, but 40D -> 50D is questionable value I'm sure for many.

I plan on buying a 50D this month ... I do have a 30D, 20D & 300D

my reasons, and I want to see the comparison, is the higher ISO performance

In July I began shooting agility inside, I walked away wanting higher ISO capability and still have a good burst ratio, so I began saving for a 1DIII, then the 50D was announced, and I want to see how it does before I put down the $$

I've been shooting running/jumping dogs on the 30D/20D at ISO 3200, 1/160th f/2.8
would love to get a faster shutter speed, and maybe be at f/5.6-8.0
that's my reason for the 50D

I have a 30D and a 40D. If anything, I'd sell the 30D in favor of another 40D. I'm very pleased with the performance of the 40D, and see absolutely no reason to upgrade "just because...."

Im ditching my old 1d's, and picking up 2 50ds. Granted, the 50d is slower than the 1d and not as well built, but the high ISO is a godsend for photojournalists on a budget.

ISO3200 looks very usable. The banding becomes noticeable at ISO6400.
