Just curious who is going to buy a 50D...

If so, why? If not, why?

Still in doubt myself

Seem like not much interest here?

Yeah, my thoughts exactly... Hence the poll

Maybe the 5D2 pulled all the attention away from the 50D

I'm just buying one, so the first one pick was the closest. I've got a 1DmkII, 1D, 5D and an XTi, so I'm not really sure it's an upgrade to what I have.

Point taken... However, too many poll options will be even more confusing

It sounds like a nice camera, but I see no compelling reason to drop the coin on it.

Nope, apart from the nice new LCD there's almost nothing else of note over the 40D and nothing important like decent AF. 15MP would be nice, but I'll wait and see what's on offer at PMA and look toward the 60D if I still need a cropper.

I'm interested in the 50D for several reasons, but at this point I'm more interested in the 5D Mk II.

I have a 30D and held off getting the 40D as I didnt feel it was a big enough upgrade in itself. Now that the 50D is out I will probably go for it - I just wish it had slightly more AF points for BIF...

I had a 30D, pre-ordered a 40D. It was a huge improvement over my copy of the 30D. Have a 50D on pre-order. Do I need it? Probably not. But I can afford it, it has more features, I can still trade my 40D at Henry's, and I like having the latest and greatest. I hope it is better.

I have a 30D and while I like the look of the 50D I don't really see the need for the upgrade.

Perhaps when the 60D comes out I might pick up a used 50D. Let someone else take the big depreciation hit.

5D MkII just more interesting, at this point.

Ditto. I'll eventually get one of those instead of a 50D.

I'm intrigued, as it would suit my sports shooting needs, but I don't know if I want to spend the money on another 1.6x crop camera. I think I'll wait for the 1D Mk III to be superseded, then I'll buy one used.

I will but one if I find out that that the AI Servo focus is a little better than the 40D. I would want to use this occasionally for sports and birds in flight. I am hoping the new processor helps the AF lock a bit better.

The AF Microadjustments can help with lenses that are just a little off, but that is a different issue. This would help ensure that what the AF system locks onto is in optimal focus.

Has anyone tried sports or BIF flight with the 50D yet?

I am upgrading my 20D to a 50D - should have it tomorrow or Thursday.

My 20D is used almost exclusively as a remote camera and as such is normally prefocused, stopped down, and at high iso (or sits in wait as my emergency back-up camera). The Live View should help with focussing while lying on the ground or attaching it to something well over my head, more pixels will allow me to crop to get the framing I want when the athlete/equine/canine does not pass by the camera exactly where I have framed, the extra 1.? frame per second will make it 20% more likely to get the image timing I want (still have not got the remote triggering timing down to the point where I am not just hammering on the pocket wizard trigger) and hopefully any per pixel high ISO perfomance gains coupled with the additional pixel numbers will lead to an increase in image quality as I am not especially excited about the quality of the 20D in H mode, especially when I end up wanting to crop an image. PLus all of my lenses required some sort of microAF adjust with the Mk III, so squeezing a little more quality out of the images with microAf is welcome.

An added bonus will be if the AF performance will allow me to use it occasionally as a second body when I am desperate for more reach - but that would be purely an added bonus as I do not like double fisting with xxD/ xD combinations because of the shutterlag differences so will likely stick with the Mk III, 1Ds Mk II combination as my primary in hand set-up. I can see using it with the 30 1.4 or 35 1.4 when I am shooting under the hoop - leaving the 300 2.8 on the 1Ds II for far court and close-up work with the 70-200 on the Mk III in well lit gyms.

I am also curious how image quality will compare to the Mk III and 1Ds mk II because if it is close enough in the normal ISO range I could see having a macro combo loaded on it, a supertelephoto on the Mk III for wildlife and a landscape lens on the 1Ds Mk II for nature hikes so that I did not need to spend time changing lenses on hikes.

The real question now is do I IR convert the 20D or wait for 5D prices to fall for another year and IR convert a very used 5D...

50D sounds like serious and all but I'll wait for AF improved model. maybe the 60D will get AF upgrades and best of all it'll have 50D features.

I want to upgrade, but I'm leaning toward waiting for the 5D MII.
Fast AF for wildlife is a concern of mine, and maybe the 50D will shine at this, but the full-frame is calling to me for the landscape shots and high-megapixel macro work. Time will tell.
Then again, maybe I should just drop on the 50D now while businesses are still accepting credit cards...

I already have one coming. I have a 5D, and sold my 300D about 2 years ago. So I needed a backup and wanted something for action/sports. Debated about 1DMkIIn vs 40D awhile back, but held off. Hopefully the higher fps and different AF from the 5D will work out. Plus the cost is 1/2 as much.

Tempted but will most probably skip.
AFAIC, the only thing that the 50D has over the 40D is 5 extra megapixels. Here's what the difference looks like:

I really prefer the 5D-II (or Nikon D700) but my current financial situation just does not allow either. I am upgrading for the AF micro-adjustment, LCD (eyes getting worse at age 50), higher MP for better detail and cropping ability. The photo above doesn't prove the point mentioned in the text, I can easily see the higher detail in the 50D image, that's just what I am looking for.

I currently accept the probability that noise and high ISO performance will be similar or just slightly improved over the 40D, which is a decent accomplishment with 50% more pixels in the same area. I wish I could trust the bold predictions by Canon about improved ISO and focus speed/accuracy, but they said the same about the 40D and it was only a slight improvement over the 20D I used to own.

Two more reasons I am getting the 50D instead of the 5D-II, my 17-55 2.8 IS and Tokina 11-16 2.8 crop lenses are fantastic. There is no full frame equivalent to the 17-55 until Canon makes an IS version of the 24-70L, and the 16-35L costs almost 3X what the Tokina did.

The 50D makes sense for me right now, next year could be very different.

A friend of mine is interested in my 30D and some older lenses. If he buys, I'll upgrade to the 50D. If not, I'll continue to enjoy my 30D and put up with the limitations for now. I'm looking forward to hearing from all the new 50D and 5D II owners.

Enjoy.

This looks to be enough to convince me to upgrade the 20D - the 40D wasn't a big enough jump to justify the cost for me.

I'll wait several months to see how the camera performs. If it delivers what it promises, I'll upgrade in February or March.

Don't have a crop body, but have wanted one since I replaced my 20D with a 5D. So, I just ordered the 50D. Also, I will more likely than not upgrade my 5D to the MarkII.

My 40D has barely 2000 clicks on it. I anticipate to be getting another 2 years worth of use out of it. At that time, I may have to get another 1.6 crop camera, whatever is available.

Extra Mp is the last thing Canon can entice me with into buying the 50D. Ten Mp is plenty enough here.
