I refuse to believe that the anemic, incremental 5DII is going to be Canon's only new offering this year. Clearly it is aimed at Rebel owners, not current 5D owners, nor 1-series owners looking for a backup.

Where's the camera for us?

Are they really going to have a product line that jumps from $2700 to $8K? Makes no sense.

I predict something will be shown, either at Photokina, or within a few months, in the $3500 range. (witin reach of the D700 market, but costly enough to be able to decimate it.

One can dream, so here I go:

Better AF, of course.
No embarrassing "print" button.
Articulating LCD
Completely programmable menu screen.
Gapless photosites, for higher ISO without sharpness loss.
Silent mode
Better shutter, with perhaps 5 fps.
Either significantly better video, or no video at all.

Still no built-in grip (for those that want compact.)
Still no dual data cards. (something has to differentiate the top-end pro camera)

How is nearly double the res, HD video, and besting the already class leading ISO performance, latest gen Live View, and weather sealing, all for less money, incremental?

The 5DII will still allow the world to turn as usual, but if you call it incremental, you either don't grasp the meaning of the word, or you are referring to a rather large increment.

You evidently have not been reading the various 5DII threads. Perhaps you missed the vast majority of negative posts, from the incredble number of people (mostly 5D and 1-series owners) who are dissapointed in this offering.

Or perhaps you currently own a Rebel.

The kiddies should stay off this thread. The 3D will not be for them, anyway.

You mean...you were serious? Well, I'll try to give a serous answer then.

People need to realize that the 5d never was, and will probably never be, the ultimate small camera with amazing features at a price that would put all others out of business. So don't get mad because your mustang can't cut the same lap times as a ferrari.

The D700 is not aimed at the 5d, it was made to be a great all around full frame, and that's what it is(if you like paintings at high iso). The 5d is more the landscape/portrait/artists type camera, and so is the 5d2. If you want badass af, go buy a mk3(if you can handle a little ghosting), if you want weather sealed, buy the mk3, if you want full frame, buy the 1ds. You speak as if you're upset that they haven't built the ultimate camera, why would they do that, it makes it hard to beat next time.

And just because a bunch of people do something, it doesn't make it smart, or mean it makes sense. And mentioning it only makes it sound like you enjoy riding trains.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with the rebel, it fills its requirement...or did you expect that to have wicked fast af, weather sealing, iso who knows, etc. etc?

I don't know, only 918 posts in three months, maybe if you post more you could get across what you are trying to say.

I don't own a rebel, and need not concede to others opinions. And perhaps you've missed the number of posts of people happy for what the camera is, and will be for them. I'm just dandy with my 1ds3, thanks for asking, but would not mind one bit a 5d2 as more compact back up or walk around cam.

Take 2 5D frames and marry them, you have 24MP, this is what I was referring to, nearly double the number of pixels. You are referring to LINEAR resolution, in which case, yes, it would require FOUR times the AREA. I was referring to square area... which it is. 4sq ft is twice as many sq ft as 2sq ft... vernacular would appear to be your problem in this situation.

If a 3D surfaced, I would be thrilled.... you don't hear me knocking so called 'lower models'. Horses for courses, the 5D was never destined to be the performance cam you are rabbling for. It's a tool of the deliberate. If that's not you, get a different body and stop polluting the forum with negativity, it's just old. A Rebel isn't for me, but it doesn't 'suck' takes great pictures in the right hands in the right circumstances... just like any other camera, including the 5D2.

Anyhow, I don't think there will be another camera coming. Canon would be smart to cater to "the Rebel users" since they're the most important customers. Rebels are good cameras by the way.

listen to the guys who seened to have been in the know, not one implies that canon has even the slighest interest in such a beast nor that canon remotely gets the desire for a 3D.
there are a few wild rumors that the 1dmkiv may arrive early and be 16.7-18MP at 8-10fs FF with a little higher DR than the 5dmkii and perhaps prices somewhat lower than the previous 1D's were.

still likely more than 3D price people had expected and it'll be the same old bulky unit though.

Your post didnt ring of rumorous info... just bashing of confirmed cams, and conjecture of what owners of various other cams (that you don't own) 'must think'.

Then you spouted incorrectly about how resolution multiplication works.

I represent myself but I think the general sentiment is many long time users (I lost the info for a previous account, been here in general 7 years) are tired of the noise to signal ratio and general whining that goes on. Want a nikon? Get one. Want a Hasselblad? Get one of those too. Want a rainbow colored unicorn? Good luck, but I don't want to hear how upset you are that you can't have one. I'm here for information and talk of gear that exists.

DPReview is far better suited to these types of posts IMHO, you should check it out. You'll probably find all the sympathy you want.

Come on. Canon is just continuing the 5d philosophy of best IQ for low price... to say that it's a "rebel owner's" camera is just an unintelligent opinion. It might not be for everyone, but for people that enjoy or need static IQ, then it's the perfect cam. Just because you need high speed AF and a higher frame rate, doesn't mean that landscape shooters need it too.
What was the original 5d intended for anyways? The same, static IQ crowd.
I am disappointed that Canon did not broaden their niche market to attract action shooters and make the camera more generalized, but the more I think about it, why should they change their philosophy? Different cameras for different people, different purposes. It's all the expectations that the 5d would be a wonder, do-it-all cam that got us all so judgmental about the new release. In all regards to the older 5d, the new 5d is an amazing camera, just not for everybody. While it would be nice to have a 3d, I would not count on it.

I am a bit surprised that Canon did not allow a higher frame rate when shooting at lower resolutions.

What's the price? $3000-3500? No, that would eat into the 1DmkIII sales. $2500-3000? No, that would eat into the 5DmkII sales.

there just isn't much of a market for this kind of camera. knock canon all you want, but most people that are going to spend this kind of money on a camera are pros that will spend the extra on a 1d series

Whatever they name it, the "missing" camera could sit at $4000. There's no need to discount. The people that want it will buy it. They're not going to jump ship to Nikon if Canon don't release it $500 cheaper than a D700.

Many pro's I know want a 3D type camera. They are frustrated that their backup camera has to be another 1DMKIII (or IIn or whatever), or a 40D. Nikon did it, why not Canon.

Oh, will cut into 1D market! Yeah... ok then.

So, they can't increase resolution - that's Ds territory. They can't increase speed much - that's MkIII territory. So what could they do, for $5,000 (intermediate price between the 5D and the Ds)? Admitedly, probably nothing, since there's not much point in doing yet another incremental tweak that could siphon sales away from a 1 series camera.

But if they did:
-full frame
-full weather sealing
-no video
-flash controller built-in
-hot swappable hard drive (think slipping a160GB iPod into a space under the body)... wait! This should be on the Ds.
- get rid of the print button, replace it with a user-defined function button (mirror lock-up anyone?)
- New sensor with higher dynamic range?
- X-sync above 1/200th?

Or something entirely different - a modular "studio camera" format based on existing canon technology: sensor backs for current sensors, focal plane & leaf shutters, EF and EF-s lens modules... Nah. No way! Canon builds SLR's...

Speaking of SLR's, maybe it will be mirrorless and shutterless (lose the "reflex). Sensor based focus, sample the data coming off the sensor at different durations for shutter speeds (think of the x-sync speeds you could get!). Throw out the old paradigm entirely, lose all that mechanical stuff that moves around and wears out. Put a giant touch screen in the back, no buttons except shutter release, on/off, control wheels, and user defined tactile buttons. Think of iPhone functionality on a camera where the whole back of the camera is a display. Put Wi-Fi into the thing so you can work wirelessly (and send/receive e-mail)...

Forget high end digital video - Red seems to be doing a fine job of that already.

I guess negative refraction technology isn't quite ready yet...

So, that's all the rumor generating ideas I can think of for now, although since I made them all up myself, they probably don't qualify as genuine rumors until they circulate around a bit.

the canon apologists don't get it. we know about the 1-series, and yes it's fantastic. the problem is that it's large and heavy. if canon made a "3d" they could charge whatever they want, because there is a huge segment crying out for it.

you people need to try shooting with a 1v or eos 3 (really really old cameras that used "film"), then see if you can keep a straight face when you tell us there is no reason for 1-series performance in a xxD form factor.

Maybe I should start a 7D thread. The only thing that the 5D interest me is the full frame. Otherwise i would be jumping on the 50D instead. I'm waiting for a 50D with full frame; that'll be more intersting than a 3D compromise between the 1D/5D.
