The 5D Mark II has certainly caused a lot of buzz. There was a thread started about it at another site. I stated that the 50D-$1400 + 5D Mark II-$2700 = $4100 compared to the 1Ds Mark III-$7200.

Just to give you some insight. I currently own the 1Ds Mark III and the 1D Mark III. I shoot weddings, portraits, landscapes, and just got a gig to shoot college sports. The 1D Mark III is without a question my work horse for weddings and sports, with the 1Ds Mark III being the work horse for portraits, landscapes, and weddings too.

I need a second body for sports. I shot a college football game last Saturday with the 1D Mark III + 400mmL f/2.8 IS and the 1Ds Mark III + 70-200mmL f/2.8 IS. The 1Ds Mark III did a great job but lacked the fps. I know I get 5 fps but with the super large file size, I was getting 4 shots off and CF card's write buffer was filling up. (Sandisk Extreme III)
Also the 1Ds MIII only goes to ISO3200. I'm thinking the 50D with it's higher fps, higher ISO, 1.6 crop factor would be the better choice for sports.

We'll have to see how the 5D MII's image quality stacks up against the 1Ds MIII's image quality to make any judgements, but the 5D MII would probably make a nice FF replacement for the 1Ds MIII.

So, here's the scenario. Someone offered me $4500 for the 1Ds Mark III so I can buy the 50D and the 5D Mark II.

Thoughts, opinions, comments? Would you? Should I?

You can probably sell your 1DsIII for more than $4500 here on the Buy & Sell. That said, if I were you, I'd just sit tight and see how what people's experiences are with the 50D and 5D2 before making decision.

You will loose some money by selling your 1Ds3... Maybe the same amount that you would have to spent on a new 50D. I'd say... keep what you got an add a 50D. See if it suits you...

Well, the good thing is, this person is willing to wait. I always need 2 bodies so one of the stipulations IF we agree to do this was that I had to wait until Canon actually releases these 2 for sale. And obviously I wanted to see some images that came from these 2 bodies.

Dann B, yes I thought about that as well. The only thing that is making me consider otherwise is the 5D MII's high ISO. The 1Ds only goes to 3200. In addition, if the 5D MII handles high ISO better than the 1Ds, that would be another huge factor for me. Weather sealing and more AF points are nice but better IQ and better high ISO performance is more important to me.

But do you need more than ISO 3200 on your 1Ds3 for portraits, landscapes and weddings? Well, maybe weddings... But you can always use your 1D3 for that

Only for some wedding receptions. The bigger factor will be IQ and lack of noise at 1600 and 3200. I'm anxious to see some side by side comparisons.

Very well put. I most certainly would have to agree there.

You will get more than 4 shots of your camera. The buffer in the camera will cover a lot more than that, even if you had used the slowest card on the market. (and you had a descent card)

You can get $6000+ for your camera.

This switch would mean that you would have to have three different type batteies and chargers. One for the MkIII, one for the 50D and another for the 5D MkII.

The 50D and the 5D MkII will probably have the same battery. My did own the 40D and the 5D and they had the same battery.

Most 1Ds3 users are only getting a 3 frame and bit the buffer because Long ISO noise reduction is turned on. I was baffled with mine when I got it, then I realized I had this setting on. This needs much higher processing power, so it clogs up the buffer. Turn it off, you'll get your full 5fps up to whatever amount the buffer holds.

Nope, the 50D uses the same battery as the 40D, the 5D2 uses a new kind of battery.

I think you should wait for some time and see the prices of new models, then sell your 1Ds for the new cameras, this is because of their new great properties .

you should get 5400/5500 US$ from DSMKII right now, it's price is going to fall down to 4.5-5K at the end of November when 5dMKIII is going to be out.
Pre order a 5DMKIII (2700US$) and you can use almost 3000K for adding some great lens...
