I think its a great camera, so folks who currently own the 5D .. please upgrade and sell the 5D for cheap soon. I've been dying to buy a FF.

From RG:

The 5D Mark II's sensor also features the same light-gathering area within each pixel (called the fill ratio) and same microlens coverage over each pixel as the company's current flagship.

no gapless sensor?

edit:

Hm, imaging resource claims they are using the gapless microlenses

A couple of improvements from the Canon 50D's image sensor also make their way into the 5D Mark II's imager - an improvement in the per-pixel light sensitive area, and gapless microlenses

But...will it blend? (Lets hope not!)

my primary criteria: resolution & dynamic range.

resolution: big step up from 5D - DR: some improvements in
graduations - small step but probably worthwhile.
price: when it goes down a tad on the street i ll get one.

live view, micro adjust, screen, etc: all catch up

btw.: wide angle: only the 24 reworked? ZE 21 here i come!

wow I seriosuly hope that is a typo and they didnt hold even the sensor back for the 1dsmkiv.

if they held back gapless microlenses and coupled that with exact same AF as 5D and 4fps, after three years? and still won't have it out until as late as late novemember?

I won't be buying it either. I like my 1D Mark II which has been an incredible workhorse.

To bad too. I was really looking forward to moving to a full frame camera, but maybe the used 1Ds Mark III cameras will drop significantly in price.

Autofocus The 5D Mark II's AF system, including its CMOS AF sensor, carries over mostly unaltered from the 5D, and is comprised of nine AF points plus six Assist AF points. The centre AF point acts as a cross-type sensor with lenses whose maximum aperture are f/5.6 or faster. If an f/2.8 or faster lens is used, the centre AF point detects focus with triple the precision of slower lenses.

They could have revamped the AF a tiny bit? :P We can hope that the lightning fast (from one user preview) AF from the 50d carries over?

Resolution looks good!
ISO looks good!
Viewfinder looks good!
fps looks a bit slow.
Weather sealing? Well, jury is out I guess, but looks notsogood.
af micro adjust? good!
video? irrelevant for me as of now, but ok!

Let me know when previews/reviews come in!

Comparing to 5D:

- The same shutter, mirror and most everything else you find inside the mirror box
- Shutter lag remains almost identical, at a Canon-specified 73ms
- The same AF as 5D, they didn't even use the new AF from 50D
- maximum frame rate is 3.9 fps and the buffer is 14 RAW frames

I'm glad at least they used the new LCD!

I too am worried they left out the gapless. Would be a shame to have a newer/better technology in the 50D. I really hope that's an accidental omission.

I am, however, suprised that EF-S lenses will work. Will be curious to read what the sensor scales down to with a crop lens mounted.

Can't believe they left the same AF in there. WTF.

For some of the events in my visual anthropology I would love the video for shorts. I don't understand though about the 4gb. What is the maximum storage for the camera?

That's a mistake, surely

At least we still have a direct-to-print button!

I may buy this camera simply because I have a use for limited-length, non optimized video recording with lousy audio. (it certainly won't replace a dedicated camcorder.)

-But JEEZ, this is not even close to the camera I'd hoped for. It seems everyone is underwhelmed, and with good reason.

I believe the 5DII will have the 40/50D AF system type (+aux AF points) which is an improvement over 5D I.

One thing is very intriguing-

they show the new battery grip (meet the new boss, same as the old boss...) but then they also show a DIFFERENT grip mounted, that says "wireless file transmitter."

I assume that means the transmitter is built into this second grip. I guess that's a good thing if you intend to buy the transmitter right away. It kind of sucks if you want to buy a grip now, and maybe buy a transmitter later.

Well, it's a small point, and I guess that's what Ebay / FM sales is for.

I wonder how far that transmitter can go, and if it needs a clear line-of-sight?
-------------------------

Another thought: How cool would it be if that transmitter could also be used as a flash trigger?

-And as long as I'm dreaming - too bad it doesn't say "transceiver." How friggin' cool would it be if you could also control the camera from your laptop without any extra on-camera hardware?

If it did that, Canon would definitely have my attention.

Canon would have done it the other way round if true, lower spec camera now and higher spec camera just before photokina. Sorry you've seen their entire announcements related to lenses and DSLR's now - 50D, 5D II, 24L II

Wiki:
he maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GB minus 1 "null" byte (232−1 bytes). Video applications, large databases, and some other software easily exceed this limit.

The non-gapless sensor would be a joke, unless they're just using the same sensor as the 1ds3 as I suspected earlier...

If it's indeed a new sensor, and not just a firmware update, wouldn't 1ds3 users be clamoring for a sensor swap?
