Nikon UK is pleased to announce the versatile Zoom-Nikkor AF-S DX VRIII IF-ED 18-165mm f/3.5-8G .

Compact, lightweight and packed with an array of advanced features, the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor lens offers 18-165mm f/3.5-8 IF-ED focal range length with Nikon ED glass, Silent Wave Motor and enhanced Dual Vibration Reduction (VR III).

The lens fill the gap in consumer lenses starting a 18mm. We previously had the the 18mm to 35, 55, 70, (16mm-) 85, 105, 135 and 200mm. With this new lens Nikon is comfortable in filling the space between 135 and 200.

There was some discussion about how many f3.5 - 5.6 lenses we have, so we make the exciting announcement that this lens will be f3.5 - 8.

Nikon believes that 'in lens' functionality is much more effective than 'on-camera-body' as provided by other manufacturers like Sony. Nikon will now ship this new lens with GPS and VRIII. The lens will be modular, allowing the photographer to add features onthe go. Nintendo Wii compatibility is expected to ship soon.

The combination of the VR III technology, which has two elements compensating for vibration, the 9x zoom feature and the focal length range – equivalent to a 27mm-247mm lens in 35mm format – means the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor is an ideal total package for completely unknowledgable amateurs. Professionals won't touch it with a bar of soap.

Higher f/ number = bettar amirite?

First lens that came to mind while reading this was Sigma's 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3

and 27-248, not 147

What no CF card reader built in...??

Quantaray Zoom lens - 28 mm - 90 mm f3.5 to 5.6 (42-135mm on d300) quite similar to the above lens...did nikon outsource this one..??

Given how sharp the consumer lenses are, I don't see why they are for unknowledgeable amateurs. They do a pretty good job for what they are and especiallly for how much they cost and weigh.

And I believe David Alan Harvey did a National Geographic article about Kenya with a D70s, a 18-70 and a Q-flash.

You work in a shop, you should see the reasons for this new lens. It is obvious that in the consumer market the race in bodies is for features and the race in lenses is for small, light, as much range as you can get and VR.

but I think you missed a point:
since we all expect Nikon to release SEVERAL lenses at a time...

I would expect an announcement like:

Nikon is proud to announce a range of lenses for unknowledgable amateurs,
the 18-165 VRIII, the 18-135VR version 2, the 16-85 non VR, the 18-55VRIII, and the 85 1.4 AF-S.

(that last one is a mistake )

In any case, we all know that the perfect consumer zoom is a 4-400mm f/12-16 VR with the ability to do a 12x digital zoom too.

Well, maybe reading too much into this one Panos. It's an f3.5 - f8 lens. Just a lot of tongue-in-cheek and a bit of poking fun at Nikon.

Just for the record, (without getting too serious) I don't actually have a problem with the lens, as such.There's just so much that they can release.

The twin kit 18-55 VR and the 55-200 VR are excellent lenses. I highly recommend them to most customers when buying a D60 for instance. The 16-85 is another very good lens.

But I speak to so many people who keep telling me they want something better or faster. I sold a 120-400 Sigma today for the owner of a D40x. Excellent lens actually. Nikon have no option here.

Also have another Sigma 17-70 (good lens, not brilliant), f2.8 - 4.5 for someone else. They're happy.

I'd be more thrilled with Nikons strategy if they went after Tamrons 17-50 f2.8. Nikon might "think" they're protecting their 17-55 f2.8, but they are losing sale after sale.

The 18-105 3.5 - 5.6 VR, great..... NOW can we move on and update some of the others.
