Wow ... the leak from the China website was spot on. Even the folks who mentioned the 18-200 were spot on. JArnold - you found the 50D page on Canon China - you got street cred now.

Well, that's that. Glad its finally official. Looks nice, but not enough to make me ditch the D300.

I wonder when the bottom drops out of the 40D prices on the Buy/Sell forum. Might be a good couple of weeks to sit back and watch for a bargain upgrade.

Sounds like a D300 with 2.7 more MP and a direct print button

No doubt those who jumped on the leaked web page and the whispers from the Canon vendors will now tell those of us who were cynical "how does my a$$ taste?" It's difficult to take a web link with "dog-cr" seriously.

From now on, I will also jump on every reliable source such as inside sales guy, brochure printers, UPC posters, and shopowners.

I guess I'll just go out and make more photos with my outdated 1D2N.

What are the predictions about 60D?

I was hoping against hope for GPS compatibility. But, since it doesn't have it (other than with the wireless transmitter thingy), I probably won't be an early adopter.

$1399 USD. Should sell for $1299 when it hits the streets, maybe $1200-$1250 by xmas.

Pretty much playing catch-up. Still, not bad, except for the ridiculous 15.1 MP.

And about $300 less.

The 15.1 megapixels will be a huge advantage if it means that Canon uses a weaker AA filter. At that pixel density, the lenses can double as AA filters.

My only concern is what, if any, improvements there are to the AF. With Digic IV and newer algorithm processing the AF, in theory, should be more responsive, but will it be more accurate. If I were starting out and compared the 50D to the D300, the only real difference would be the AF. Is it as good as the D300 or worse?

AF appears to be identical to the 40D.

Not entirely. With Digic IV, faster processing, and newer AF algorithms, it *probably* is better. The question is how much more. Canon's competition is the Sony A700 and Nikon D300 and it has to be nearly as good.

Dang, well I don't normally follow the "pro-sumer" cameras but you know, this looks very sweet, especially for that price.

got

Live Mode now offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame – for fast, spontaneous portraiture. (dpreview)

No in-body IS either.

It'd be cool to see a side-by-side features comparison with the D700. Oh well, it'll all come in time.

Crop factor vs full-frame.
$1400 vs. $3000.

I don't get why you think they are comparable.

WOW ... this is a big upgrade ... I just did a side-by-side of the Canon 50D versus 40D.

One thing I'm curious about I'm pretty certain that Canon uses a thumbnail for playback ... so when you zoom in 10X, it's very difficult to tell if you truly have dead-on focus ... hopefully this is corrected in the 50D since they (finally!) have the high-res display.
