The have been no credible rumours other than the 18-200 which rates zero on my interest scale anyway. Most other rumours are mere wishlists.

There is some evidence that Canon will come out with a 18-200 IS lens. According to Bob Atkins the Chinese Canon site that apparently leaked the 50D announcement included a picture of the 50D with an 18-200 IS attached. Here is the link in which Atkins discusses it:

I personally couldn't care less, however, as I have zero interest in this lens either.

Best wishes,

Steve

For those of wanting this lens, one bit of bad news, If you look close at the picture, it doesn't say "USM" on the 18-200.

Now about 50 24-70 mark II threads will start.

My mom's friend, who is friends with the lady who knows how to spell Canon, who is related to a guy who shot a Cannon, whose husband is divorcing her, for knowing the Nikon crew said that the 24-70 MkII will have 6 stop IS, and will be an f/2.0 lens, instead of 2.8.

It will also have a USB port, for direct lens to computer imaging, without the camera, 79 AF points, be able to burn ants ala magnifying glass, weigh less than the 50 1.8, be sharper than the 17-55, and detonate all land mines, before you get to them. Oh it will be kitted with the 50D.

I hear Canon's coming out with a new 14mm prime, with IS.

Newly priced 85L @ $525 with free shipping, and a 40d thrown in since those are now outdated.

That would be awesome, the Zeiss glass I have for my M8 is very nice. Love to use something similar in terms of build and image quality on Canon bodies. Plus since it isn't loaded with AF motors and electronics, price is reasonable too.

So what? what do you want for $900?

I need/want a new P&S camera and surprisingly, this is a lens that interests me. Is it any good? Probably not, but it's a P&S lens, nothing more, and that's how I'd use it.

This is the epitome of a "me too" product and while it may prove competent, anyone thinking they're going to get something really special here is probably mistaken. .

Is that a wish, a rumour or a fact?

It's a fact that it's a rumour

You wish. It is actually rumoured to be a fact.

why is there no interest in the 18-200 surely as an allrounder leave it on your camera it should be pretty handy?

It all depends on what type of shooter you are. Such a lens (and at the product level where Canon introduces it) is geared more to a casual shooter looking to avoid lens changes. Those buyers, and there are plenty of them, will probably like this lens a lot. As you rightly point out, it will be "pretty handy" for many of them.

In these forums there is a wide range of different types of photographers. This lens will not appeal to those who are looking for something closer to the "high end" in performance terms.

I would rather see a 100-400L Mk II with a 4-5 stop IS.

Boy I hope so!

I hope not.

Adding IS means adding a lens group. On a zoom there is a price to pay in IQ. I would like them to make a 24-70 MKII that has the best IQ possible. There is already the 24-105/4 IS.

With the coming sensors and short focal lengths, resolution seems more important that IS.

It seems possible to include IS and still wind up with greater image quality, though. Witness the 70-200 f/4L IS.

Interestingly, 70-200 f/4.0 L IS did not suffer, as far as IQ is concerned, after adding IS. Some may say, it actually gained.

I second that although I can take 400 f/5.6 L IS (at least 4 stops), instead.

Seconded. I believe its going to start at $700 and its weight is the sum of the 18-55 kit and the 55-250. If it proves "competent", it would be a great single lens hiking solution. The bear usually doesn't wait around for you to change from your scenery lens to your critter lens. This lens in no way competes with real lenses, it's competing with a G9. And then I'd have to buy it a Rebel body to save another 3/4 lb. You'd have a 2.5 lb, APS C, 10X zoom P&S. OT, I know, but that's why I'm interested in this lens.

Ya, I've heard rumors from Chinese websites about the macro lens with IS, as well as an f/2 zoom lens with IS.

But that telezoom thing is kind of new to me.
