do what I do, I let the beta testers do their job in the first 2-3 months, then once the price goes down a bit, wait a bit more...then wait a bit more. By then ,1 year has passed by and the camera becomes $600 cheaper. Imagine the gas $ saved....

By that time the 70D will be announced and the cycle starts all over again .

Like you I laughed at the 30D upgrade, and jumped on the 40D but unlike you the 50D extracts nothing but yawns from me.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Am I the only one thinking this is the smallest upgrade Canon has put on the marked to date?

Let alone face detection almost seems like a joke.

I think that the AF micro adjustment is a big plus, and the only feature that I'm missing in my 40D.

MMV. All my lenses AF spot on, on my 40D. It's me who is the problem…..

In the DPReview hands-on preview ... it states the list price is $1,299 (1,299 Euros also) ... I hope this is true.

Heres a damn fine reason for me to stick to my 40D:

CA mode at the cost of C3.

CA = Creative Auto. You get to move sliders on the full auto program to decide wether you want more or less DOF or adjusting the brightness of the image. Wow... They have re-invented the P (as in "plonker" - David Noton) and dubbed it CA. Yet maintained to have the P program still present. WHY??!

Right now I'm praying that the mode dial on the 5D mk II will feature AV, TV, M and C1-3. But we'll probably see that lovely green rectangle along with the other P&S (or is that POS?) modes. Sigh.

I sure hope this is not true - as it would mean that Europe gets screwed over once more.

Don't know why that would matter. Don't you just use the M, Av, Tv, and
possbily P modes anyway? M and Av are the only modes I use anymore.

Sorry Peter ... I was referring to the US price (it had been reported as $1,399 earlier). I'm not familiar with pricing in Europe.

C1: AV mode, F/2.8 and ISO 100
C2: AV mode, F/4.0 and ISO 400. Auto AF (Hand it to the wife setting)
C3: M, F/11, 1/250 and ISO 100, All NR turned off, all sharpening turned off. (Macro setting)

I like my 3 c's and I use them. No doubt the 50D is a great camera and a great buy for anyone looking to update their XXXD to XXD. But do we really need all those auto-everything modes?

Well, I am in shock and preparing to eat my hat:

High Megapixel count
High ISO
Focus microadjustment

I am amazed at this upgrade to the 50D. I wouldn't have predicted it for the world.

As it happens I am not going to upgrade my 40D, the main reason is that I have all my pennies saved for the 5D Mk2. If the new 5D is as radically updated as the 50D, and if the new 5D costs as much, or less than, the Nikon D700 - I am going to be a very happy photographer.

Biggest question is that now when 50D is actually announced, what are "Canon rumour" posters going to do? (aside from speculating on 5DII rumours ofcourse)..

Rant. And then speculate on the 60D

Yes, its the 40D that is looking bad in retrospect - not so much the 50D.

the price is reasonably good compared to nikon's offerings in the same class (D300). why the ouch ?

Price increase of $100 over the 40D intro price. Many Canon 40D users are getting squeezed here ... very short product cycle (especially when you consider when RAW support finally materialized), price increase on new model and price reduction on 40D (now $1099) at the same time. Essentially, many of us are looking at a loss of $700, if we are upgrading.

I find this annoying too. Why can't Canon keep the XXXD line and XXD line seperate? Those modes are a complete waste of dial space. Hell we could have C1-C6!
