I am looking for a suitable combination for travel.
I already have a Gitzo 1228 which I have been using with a Manfrotto 488RC2 Head.
I originally felt that this combination was too big and heavy for travel and was considering a GT1541T with a Markins Q3 head as a replacement.
However having read the various threads I am now thinking that the 1228 is fine but that I just need to replace the head.
The 1228 folds up to 20", extends to 53" w/o column and weighs 1.5kg. The GT1541T, whilst being 1lb lighter and 4" shorter closed only extends to 44" and is not as robust. Its also going to cost a lot of money to swap !
Thoughts?

As for the head, the Q3 seems to be a good choice but I am confused as to the QR plate as people seem to use the Q3 ball with RRS QR plate. Why is this better than the Markins plate and do you have to buy the whole Q3 head and then not use / replace the plate with the RRS ?

Also would you recommend I buy a Markins tripod base.

I use a 5D and biggest lens 70-200 f2.8.

Thanks for your help

Yes a few people change the Q3 clamp to an RRS or other brand. But the original clamp is good and will be very steady for your 5D + 70-200 lens. Just keep the original and you will be very happy with it.
