I may be interested in the 300 f4L IS. It looks like the date code is UR, is that 2003? I am also looking at the 300 2.8 for the speed, but really do not want to spend 3x - 4x more. So, what are your thoughts with using this lens for outdoor sports such as baseball, football or soccer in overcast situations. I am in Rochester, N.Y. and not sunny L.A. Lastly, would a 1.4 TC be at all useful on this, or would I be really sacrificing speed at 420 f5.6. Let me know.

Don't suppose you are thinking of selling your 500? Are you really thinking of having a 400 and a 500?

I actually just took the 500 out of the case for the first time about an hour ago. I put a 4th gen replacement foot, lenscoat and lenscoat hoodie on it. Took about 10-15 pics with it and then my daughter (3 yrs old) woke up from her nap.

I'm really interested in the 400 but can't afford to keep both.

If I were you, I would give up the 500 and get this one right away.
