I think many Nikon shooters would be happy with a camera that matches the 5D's quality and price.

Is that a tacit way of saying there are no Nikon's that match the 3 year old Canon 5D IQ in the same price range ?

I count seven "D700" threads in the first 14 on this forum. Talk about mojo... Steve Jobs wishes he had this kind of product anticipation!

I think you got your wish or at least 99% of it. The D700 will "blow the 5d out of the water" in every area but that little one called IQ in the lower ISO ranges 100-800, in which case it will sadly finish second in a field of two.

how can you say it won't keep up with the 5D at lower ISO's?

Because the D3 can't (its debatable). Same sensor, same result.

Exactly... I think the mystique is gone on the D3. The reviews and comparisons are there for everyone to see.

Best FF digital camera Nikon has made (to date), but certainly not the best FF camera available if IQ is what's important...

So pixel peepers will buy the 5D, photographers the D700. Makes sense to me

I'd like to know the answer to that too. Sounds like Canon propaganda

Then I suggest that you post some of your own real-life photos that show the difference, so that we can all be convinced.

Nah, no need to have J99 post photos. You can picture the difference yourself...in your own mind....Canon files look like crispy, perfect, computer generated images.....and Nikon files look like....photographs

cheers, Bob

Who would really want to see photos of his parents' basement anyway?

I'm just glad I didn't invest too much in DX glasswork and kept most of my old but still reasonably good FF lenses... Anyway that means saving up for a 14-24 as well...

I really really want to get the D700, but the lack of a lightweight zoom is putting 2nd thoughts in my head.

I might have to settle with the D700/14-24/Sigma 50 1.4 for the time being. Cmon Nikon! Release some updated primes and f4 zooms!

Is see it differently. A nice DX lens will still work in 5MP on a D700/D3. Which is fine by me as I don't need the extra MP to clog up my computer.

Sometimes I wish the higher MP bodies had a "small RAW" option...

Yeah, that's me too panos. If I bought a D700, it would actually to for the ISO performance in 5MP mode. Perfect.

The Tamron 28-75 is a sharp and cheap (around 300 Euro) Zoom that almost reaches the optical quality of the NIkon 24-70 at half the weight and a fifth of the price. The AF should be quick on the new Nikons.

Drawbacks:
- not as robust
- no AF-S
- Sample variation may result in misaligned sample, can send in to Tamron or snd back and buy another one

Not only the Tamron 28-75 but some older Nikkor like 17-35 and 35-70's gonna have a new life on FF DSLR

Don't know if they'll get new life or not but I do know that 2nd hand 17-35/2.8 and 35-70/2.8 have gone up in price and have kind of disappeared from the used market lately...

True... I'm looking for a used 17-35mm in Japan and it's being a pretty hard work... I found 28-70 AF-S pretty good but pretty pricey... maybe I'm looking in the wrong place
