For those that have made this decision, did you have a wide angle lens (12-24, 10-20, etc)? and if so how did that effect your decision. Currently my gap is from 24mm to 70mm, and I am looking for a great portrait/walk around lens.

Thanks
Chris

Yes, I had the 12-24 and 17-35, and I am supporting both film and DX format cameras. The 24-70 made perfect sense to me and I have not regretted it. (Take away those two wide angle lenses and I would have purchased the 17-55 without even thinking about it.) Since I someday plan on going to FX, the 24-70 makes even more sense, though one should buy for today, not for what you might do someday.
