I have a tripod but it's not always practical to use one, especially if skiing. Also my tripod is somewhat archaic and heavy having belonged to my parents and being a student it seems unreasonable to buy a lighter one when I don't particularly need a new one... |

I'm not sure what camera you have, but the new 18-55IS kit lens is getting excellent reviews. It's not expensive, it's small and light, and has IS. |
