Apologies since I would imagine this has been asked repeatedly and frequently.

Anyway, I am a student (so funds are, while not minimal, certainly limited) and I spend a fair bit of time at the coast/beach and am close to both Dartmoor and Exmoor. Some time is also spent skiing when I can.

I currently posses a sigma 28-200mm telephoto zoom lens and a canon 100mm macro lens and I was looking for something that would be good for general purpose outdoor photography since I do spend a fair bit of time outdoors and the canon lens which is attached most of the time is not particularly well suited to landscape photography for obvious reasons.

Can anyone suggest something that is good for general purpose outdoor/landscape photography, possibly wide-angle, but yet is not too maliciously expensive. The problem I have with the sigma lens is that without a tripod the photography quality is not the highest (can never hold myself perfectly steady).

The simplest solution would be to start using a tripod. It'll do wonders for your photography.

I have a tripod but it's not always practical to use one, especially if skiing. Also my tripod is somewhat archaic and heavy having belonged to my parents and being a student it seems unreasonable to buy a lighter one when I don't particularly need a new one...

I'm not sure what camera you have, but the new 18-55IS kit lens is getting excellent reviews. It's not expensive, it's small and light, and has IS.

Seems to me that it's what you're looking for.

I have no problem with the concept of the tripod, I tend to take mine when I foresee it being usable but it isn't always practical to have it with me depending on what I am up to at the time.
