Has anyone received their adaptor from Mark? If so, how is it working?

I would have thought we would have had them by now, but none here yet. I e-mailed Mark and have not heard anything back.

A number have now arrived with people: I know, because I'm getting emails concerned that they appear not to fit on their cameras.

In advance of any complaints in this regard, can I just emphasise what it says in the instructions – if you don't wind in the stop screw fully, the adaptor will not mount on the camera! The tolerances are very tight and if the head of the hex screw protrudes even fractionally above the flange, it will foul.

Thus far, everyone who has double checked the position of this screw and set it correctly has had no problem with it.

Good to hear that people in the US have started receiving their adapters. I ordered mine on Dec. 24th so I would assume I'm in the first batch that was sent out. Did you guys get a tracking # number? I tried to find out shipping info via emails and PMs to Mark but never got a response

I think they are coming over on the titanic. It's supposed to be unsinkable.

I just got mine today in CA.So far it is working well on my 1ds3. Will take some comparison shots with 14-24 vs 16-35Lmk1,24-105L.Unfortunately, handheld as I am waiting for a RRS L bracket to arrive.
This adapter is derived off a photodiox pro adapter with the extra changes to contol the g lens aperture lever. There are only 3 markings for f2.8,f8,and f22.The distance between the marks is small due to the small distance the lens aperture lever travels.
So for precise f-stop control you will want the lever version.
Since this adapter is thicker than my fotodiox non-pro version adapter that I have been limping along with since xmas,I am getting better infinity focusing.

so you rotate the lens to change the aperture? wouldn't the hood, with the cutouts, affect vignetting in the final image?

Does the camera know what the f stop is, does it show up in the view finder?

No, it's fixed to always report f2.8 to the camera,no matter what f stop you have twisted the lens to.

Thanks for that info! It really doesn't matter that much. Judging from Marks tests this lens will be used only at the three f stops anyways. Can't wait to see your tests and hear more about the adapter.

Just to be clear about the relationship to Fotodiox: we have our base adaptors made at the same factory as Fotodiox – in China. Because of initial supply problems, some of the first units were actually bought via Fotodiox in the US and so have their branding. As you may have guessed, I can strongly recommend this 'Pro' adaptor if you're looking for an off-the-shelf Nikon F adaptor.

In other words, the adaptors were made in China, sent to America, shipped to Hong Kong, forwarded to England, then were delivered to the rest of the world.

We can now get everything out the door pretty fast, with the exception of getting hold of the base adaptor, which is still proving difficult to extract from China in a hurry! I've been promised that another batch will be sent from China on the 5th.

I am looking forward to receiving mine before too long then.

As I mentioned on the Canon Forum before, I have been using this Nikkor lens and a shimmed lever method on my 1Ds MarkIII since January. Although it is working great but my usage is basically limited to one aperture for both focusing and metering. I have noticed that the setup gives me a slight overexposure, ranging from 1/3 to about almost 1 stop, depending on the lighting conditions. Not it is a big deal as it can easily be adjusted in the post processing but I am just curious whether other folks that have used this lens/camera combo or similar have noticed the same situation? Whether using Mark's or any other adapter out there? Anyone, please? Short of posting a separate thread, I piggy back this question on this one.... .

Thanks,
Joshua

I get inaccurate metering whenever I use an adaptor without a focus-confirm eprom. I can't recall whether Mark's adaptors have the eprom, but if they don't, then you will probably need to use varying degrees of exposure compensation to get accurate metering at different aperture settings. This is normal.

Richard,
Thanks for your response. I have used alternative lenses quite a bit but I don't recall any lens that gives me overexposure on a consistent basis like this setup. My current Nikon to EOS adapter does have a AF confirming chip. Is that what you are referring to as "eprom"? Mark's adapter will also have the same or similar AF confirming chip, BTW. What does the chip have to do with the light metering of the camera? Could you explain please? Thank you!

Joshua,

What is the f-stop setting on your camera? With Leica lenses on my 1DIII, I turn the f-stop dial until it goes all the way to 1.0 (not f/2.0 or f/2.8 but f/1.0). That is the only way I can get an accurate exposure.

Gib,
Each time I am using an alternative lens, I always set the camera to the AV setting and let the camera choose the appropriate shutter speed, depending on the actual aperture of the lens that I control. I never encountered this issue before with any other lens. Again, it is no big deal but I was just curious whether other users have noticed the same thing using this particular lens.

I switch between M and AV. When on AV I usually do the same let the camera decide the shutter speed but there are times I may have to underexpose usually 2/3 of a stop.

One positive aspect with the delayed delivery of this adapter: when it was announced, the lens was selling for $1,800+. Now, the selling price of this lens is around $1,600.00. You practically get the adapter for free now .

That's the spirit!

Actually, I'm going to have to put the price of this thing up to cover the cost of making it: the idea initially was to make it available at the lowest possible cost as a service to a handful of like-minded obsessives. It was never priced to make a profit worth having.

Now I'm handling more than 120 orders and there isn't remotely enough margin to cover the time I'm spending on it. It's become a monstrous PITA: please stop buying them!

As soon as I get stock, they'll be sold only on eBay and they'll be closer to $250.

On the plus side, I'm not having to compensate for increasing overexposure as I stop down when using the adaptor on the 5D.

Rec'd mine yesterday (Monday) in Juneau, Alaska. Unfortuntaley, I've taken some planned and some unplanned financial hits since I ordered it so I'll have to wait to test it until I recoup some cash and can buy the 14-24. In the meantime, I'll try and borrow some G lenses from fellow Juneau photogs and give it a go. I might also rent a 14-24 for a bit just to check the combo out on my 5D and 1D2n. I'll report back with my results.

Cheers and thanks Mark!

Mark,

It's all your fault for telling us how good that 14-24 is. If you had just said that it sucked, no one would want your adapter. ;-)

Cheers,
James
