I think to find out how many times the shutter has been tripped you have to send it to canon as only them can find out with a special machine! |

But if you have the camera set up for continuous numbering, the numbering should remain consistent when you change cards. Make sure you have the camera set that way, and then try formatting the two cards with the lower numbers in camera before using them again. |

It's on the third menu... File Numbering, should be set to Continuous. |

It only has four digits, so you have to keep track yourself somehow. I use Breeze Downloader Pro to automatically add a fifth digit when I download the images -- e.g., when I stick a CF into my firewire reader, XP detects it and automatically fires up DL Pro, which in turn automatically creates a new directory named for the date the images were made (or multiple directories so named if the card contains images made on more than one date), downloads the files, renames them, checks to make sure they downloaded, then wipes the card, exits, and fires up BreezeBrowser (my image browser of choice) in the new directory. Under my particular naming choices, for example, 771E3627.tif gets renamed automatically to (because I've rolled over the odometer five times now) 1D-53627.tif. Downloader Pro has lots of other handy automatic file renaming and directory creation features.. highly recommended, and cheap. |

I use the "job code" feature. My rename string is %T1-%J%r and it's set to "Prompt for Job Code every time Downloader is run." My "job code" is just the fifth digit. For my S400 I enter 0, because it hasn't rolled over yet (and probably never will), for my D60 I enter 1, because it's rolled over once, and for the 1D I enter 5 because it's rolled over five times. DL remembers the last job code you used, so it's usually still 5 and I don't have to change it -- I only have to remember to change it if I'm dl'ing from a different camera than last time. With only one camera that wouldn't be a concern. |
