Has anyone used one? Can you use the filter holder cassette with it w/o using the grid and filter holder?

i can't find one to buy, let alone experiment with...

I certainly hope that it will hold their grid without the holder but the filter holder is square. The grids are way too expensive which is why I went with the 7" grid reflector and the Speedotron grid set. I'd suggest cutting your gels a little larger and use grip tape to attach them to the reflector. There is a picture of the new reflector on their website, I didn't see a slot to load a cassette.

I had heard that they were coming out with a new design on their grid/filter holder. My problem is I shoot in a really tight space and even at the lowest power on my PF 300s I cannot get my hairlight and BG light tamed without ND filters and the correct grid/filter holder is a bit cumbersome.

Is there a problem with just taping the gels to the outside of a head? In 15 years of lighting work the only times I've ever used gel frames or holders are on stage lights or hot video lights.

The new zoom reflector will take a 7" grid (I THINK...it might have been 8") without an accessory, as it's lipped the same way as the grid reflector. The only time I've seen one in the wild was at the PhotoPlus Expo last Fall, and even the Profoto reps in the booth hadn't seen them before opening up their show boxes.

^^dude...i asked the guys at calumet nyc (it's showing as in stock in the calumet catalog) and they had no earthly idea what i was talking about...none, zero, zilch.

put me in the tape crowd as well. fast and easy.

Can you re-use the gels after you have tape on them?

If you use gaffer tape you don't leave a lot of sticky residue on the gels.

If you use duct tape or the equivalent, the heat will make the adhesive a gooey mess.

I use the standard zooms with barndoors, best combo in my opinion. Plus you can clip gels to the barndoors super easy.

john's on the money. i will sometimes stick the tape on my gellyroll and re-use that as well. gaff tape fixes almost everything in photography and duct tape fixes the rest of the world.
