I have 2 Pocket Wizards and a Sekonic with the PW transmitter in it. What I was hoping I could do is hook one PW to D300 with the pricey trigger cord and the other to my strobe and then trigger the camera on a tripod and strobe from the Sekonic.

But alas it seems the strobe is out of sync. I am guessing I need another PW mounted in the hot shoe on a different channel to trigger the strobe? Is this the recommended way or am I missing something else?

Yes a 3rd PW would be Ideal.. You need to have them setup in relay mode... However I'm thinking this might work if you set your strobe to CH2 while the sekonic and the PW attached to the camera is on CH1. Its called Relay mode.

What are you trying to photograph that way? There may be simpler alternative solutions.

I am trying to shoot a large group shot without standing behind the camera.

Gadget Infinity also makes a $30 wireless trigger for Canon:

Another option would be to trigger the camera shutter via the PW, then use a manual flash in the hot shoe to fire the other lights via optical slave.

I've been using the phottix and so far it's flawless.

I've tried firing it through 2 rooms and 3 concrete walls (with rebar) and it worked 20/20
Got it from Ebay of course, something like $40 after shipping.
