So I was digging around on Canon's site and found this lens here

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever seen it/used it?

More importantly how much do you figure it costs?

$99K? Not bad, I'll just have to work a summer job... for the next 33 summers....

You see that it has a minimum focusing distance of about 50 feet? yikes

It also has a FOV of 1 degree. I guess it would be a good candid lens.

Man, if only Canon would offer a $90k rebate I might consider buying one.

So we have the 800mm 5.6 coming to us soon...
Do you think they will ever offer this lens at a price us mere photography mortals can afford? maybe add IS and make it weigh 22 pounds instead of 33?

That's an awesome shot. And he hand-held the lens (1200mm) with a SS of only 1/200. Incredible.

Oh my... imagine 1200mm + 2 * 2x TC + 1.6x FOVCF = 7680mm!!! That's what I call badass

Nice lens, but the size of that thing is just plain pathetic...

Yes, many have seen it because this stupid subject gets posted about every 3 months. If you did a search first, you would know that.

You'd think Canon models would be dressed with a red tube instead of the red triangle style top. Must be a trade show department oversight in consistent messaging.

we need a new forum on FM called takeachillpillplease

if we banned all the repeat threads variations there would only be two new topics a day!

yeah but if it's a mail-in rebate imagine how pissed you'd be when told your submission is incomplete

While I think this post contains some sarcasm, I have to agree with the sentiment. There are only limited uses for this lens. Certainly, it would be a good wildlife lens and it has some use in sports, but the size and the length really limit its usability in most circumstances.

As for turning it into a 7680mm with TCs...you would never get it steady enough to produce a decent shot without a permanent mounting of some time and that would be pretty much useless.

Read the article on the B&H site:

The real problem with rebates is the tax you pay on the original price. At 6% that would be nearly $6000.
I guess that means that even with a 90K rebate, I still couldn't afford it
Of course, buying it here on FM there is no tax...

No tax if you live out of state, it would be cheaper to fly to another state, rent a vacation home or apartment, and not work for a month and have the lens shipped and insured than to have to pay tax in NY .

Yeah but would you really want to be shooting a 40D, at f22 wide open?

I think not.
