I'm planning a trip to New England in the autumn to photograph the fantastic colors. Do you know any good locations to visit. Not only autumn colors locations have my interest. I plan to fly into Boston and the rent a car. Time of stay approximately two weeks.

From Boston in a rented automobile, you can head north up the coast to the Portsmouth, NH, area; then head north on the Spaulding Turnpike and Route 16. That will take you up the east side of the White Mountains. Once above North Conway, you can head west through one or more notches to the west side of the state and over into Vermont.

To see all the best spots, you will do some doubling back and forth. For example, you'll want to drive across the Kanamagus Highway (Rt 116) from Conway to Lincoln but also visit Crawford and Pinkham notches.

There are numerous hiking trails -- some easier than others -- that will take you to some beautiful visita and scenic spots that tourists who never leave their automobiles will never see. The Silver Cascades tumble down the mountain and flow under US 302 near the gateway to Crawford Notch. Near there is a trail head and for a short (30 minute or so) hike, you will be at a more spectacular view of the cascade since you will be standing at a pool at the base of one of the waterfalls.

Both states have very nice tourism literature packages. You can order the one for New Hampshire from their website www.visitnh.gov.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I live in and love New Hampshire so I can be a little prejudiced. )

If you have 2 weeks, you can follow the color as it moves south. It peaks in northern NH around Oct. 5 - 10; in central NH around the 10th to the 20th and in the Berkshires in Western Mass. around the same time or a bit later. At the end of October, there's still magnificent color in eastern Mass., for example along the Charles River. There 's parkland all along the Charles in metro Boston, and one of the best places to get fall color is in the incredibly beautiful Arnold Arboretum in Boston, which is managed by Harvard University and functions as a public park. The suggestions in the previous post are quite good, but note that the Kancamangus Highway can be bumper to bumper on a weekend. Mon. - Fri.are lot better. YOu might alos want to try Quechee and Quechhe Gorge in VT - near Woodstock VT, not far west of the Conneticut River and the lovely area around Hanover NH.

Suggestion re what to look for: Find a body of relatively still water -- a pond or small lake or a flat part of a river and look for reflections. You can find scenes like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/msandman/1342516593/in/set-205398/
in thousands of places. You probably need to get up early to do this by 9:00 or 10:00 AM, as the wind tends to pick up as the sun rises. The wind often drops before sunset.

I live in Boston and have a vacation home in NH

I spent my childhood in NE. My suggestions would depend upon you actual date in the fall.

I'll give you my suggestions (without factoring in the Logan arrival). In the fall I'd start in sougthern NE, I'd hit Mystic CT and go to the seashore and then spend some time at the aquarium....and A LOT of time at Mystic Seaport. It's hard to find a 19th century seagoing time with clippers and whaling ships anywhere else in the country. I'd also spend a few hours in New London....doing the poor man's Mystic trip. If you're a movie fan, you could also run around Mystic shooting the movie spots of Mystic Pizza.

Honestly, there's not a whole lot else I'd do in CT, depending upon the exact date. When I go home, I always hit a game at the Rent in East Hartford for a college football game in the fall.

On the way north from CT to Boston, I'd stop at Sturbridge Village...It's an 18th century town they've preserved. It's a great walking trip, and you can really get some great shots on the hundreds of miles of walking trails. Best of all, it's dead center between UConn and Boston.

Outside of CT, I'd do the obvious...Boston, which you could spend 2 weeks in itself at. But if you wanted to get out of the obvious, go to Cape Cop....great nature shots! It's about 2 hours from Boston to Provincetown....but P-town's a great place for a photograher, and Wellfleet's even better at 1 hour. Again, depending on exact time, you could stop in Plymouth and do the whole Pilgrim thing. They even do an entire Pilgrim Thanksgiving thing ever year, just around Thanksgiving.

I'm not real familiar with NH and ME, but there's a bunch of fun places there too...if you want to drive. Especially Burlingtington VT.

Vermont's a lot of fun, but, my experience has always led me to NW VT....Lake Champlain and UVT is where I always end up, and it's fun. Besides that, there's a ton of Micro Breweries which are a blast to tour. On top of that, there's a bunch of Ski Slopes. I prefer Mt Snow which is only about an hour from UVT and is great in the winter when it's snowing.

If for some reason, never forget how close you are to Canada. Lots of fun there....but man is it cold.

Obviously there's more....but no way you can do half of what was listed above in 2 weeks. If you have any specific Q's just let me know. v/r LSUConnMan
