Dear Jon,

Wow! You can't answer incriminating questions like that, or produce that kind of documentation. That's like Sheila asking if I kept receipts when I was building the biplane, or how much gas the T-6 burns. Ya gotta just smile a warm smile and convincingly say, "Oh, not all that much really".

I just had an interesting thought... The Rockford show ... where Jim may not show up due to preferring to fly L-39s ( a wonderful experience - I'm sure)

a humorous thought

I'm afraid I earned that

I think I will go to RFD though, I can fly L-39's with Glenn and the boys on many occasions. Weather would be the only factor that might keep me home.

Hey Rob - it would have been cool if you'da been there - but Alliance is coming up before we know it. ... and the Blues will be there!

Jan-Arie - Joni has always been one of my favorites, she uses weird tunings from outer space that amaze me how she gets music out of her guitar - yet it is beautiful music sometimes. Her voice has incredible range and her poetry - while a bit too melancholy and self absorbed in her lost love. She sometimes gets to be too much that way, but her imagery in aural landscapes do justice this time to the bravery and loss of such an aviator like Amelia Earhart.

I'm planning on shooting Alliance from Cabela's this year :-)

Hey Jim thanks for the insight of your job i don't know if i typed that correctly seems like a job were you have to be a little stress proof?

I really like that B&W photo and you now why because of the little figure in the right hand corner don't now if that is also a person in the left hand corner.
I gives a great perspective of the size of the plane.

ps hey thats funny after looking again at your photo there is a tractor in front of the plane didn't see that one

I'll be at Alliance in the cheap seats as well.

Last year I accidentally shot the entire show in jpg at iso 400 so hopefully this year I'll check JBear's settings and duplicate them before the show begins.

Glenn

ps - Ray - you live in League City? I was born in Clear Lake hospital and spent my first 8 years of life in League City. Looks a lot different around there these days!

Jim,
thanks very much for your description of a day's shooting. Even with all the hecticness of the days you described, you still seemed to flow through it effortlessly, at least it appears that way (of course we know better). I have built furniture for myself and family for a number of years now, and often people ask me why I don't quit my job and do it for a living. I can honestly say that I don't think I would enjoy it as much if I had to do it every day, instead of doing it because I want to the way I am now.

So, I have the deepest respect for your deep and committed professional ethos, and ability to get the job done.

Your pictures aren't so bad, either I hope to have a chance to shoot aviation subjects in the near future, and hope to learn from you as well.

Regards,
Gero

Don't check my settings - they spin like a broken clock... besides I hear they are different on Nikons anyway. Having to twist on the lenses in a backward direction should have told you that!

That Patty Wagstaf shot was done with Rodolfo's new rig. I have to admit - it sure is a Nikon! I did her whole series and a few more with it and overall its well balanced and generally comfortable to shoot with. The results are in the photos I will post. I like the ergonomics and dial accessibility on my Canons much better - but I'm sure its all what you get used to. The big problem I found was that the film winder was on the bottom right - and for some reason it didn't seem to be well placed... and I thought 120 went out a long time ago...

Rodolfo's rig didn't come with a power winder? Those Nikons, jesh.

What a fantastic thread! Do any of you that photograph at air shows make it out to Reno for the National Championship Air Races in September? I would love to meet any that do. We have five acres that back up to the airport with a great view of the last pylon before the finish if you want to shoot from there.

What does one do with their family if they get the photo package for alliance? One of my students wants to buy a table and I want to take my girlfriend without paying for both.

Greetings, learle, that's a kind offer! I suspect you may be about to acquire some new friends around here I'd love to make Reno one day but I don't think it will be this year. Some folks on here go there, for sure.

Hello FM members,

I apologize if this is a double post, but a member advised that I may find more answers here, in addition to the ones I already got..
I am wondering if anyone can give me some guidance.
What I would want is to take pictures of airplanes at take off, landing, preferably as close as possible.
So, what do I need from the airport, local authorities etc etc ?
This is just for my own fun, not for any sort of business.
The area where I live (for the time being that is) is KC.

Seems like there is not much info around, but maybe I did not look well enough

Many thanks
Armand

Dear Chris,

Thank you! Coming from a fellow shooter who has spent that amount of time in the trenches, your kind words mean all the more. I chose Comet lights just because I dreaded dragging SpeedotronsWhat are you doing now that you've hung up the strobes and the rat race?

Jim -

I'd like to say that I've been equally successful doing something as rewarding but I'd be lying. Still, I decided that peace-of-mind and time off was much more important than $$ so I went to work for a little ad agency doing a variety of things. I've worked with Photoshop from the very beginning (1991, I think it was), and know the ins and outs of pre-press, so I do a lot of pre-flight. But my photography, which I've been doing since 1971, is still a passion but one I pursue for myself. And there's not one morning that I wake up that I even remotely miss dealing with "prima donna" art directors.... BTW, the last couple of years "on the job", I used Paul C. Buff Ultra monolights....they were great andI wish I had them in the beginning!

Dazz,

That's a beast mate! Congrats on the new acquisition! I'm sure you and it will produce some awesome photos.

Make sure you let us know how you go, and give us a look at what it can do.

Learle - where were you last year? I was stuck on the top row of the bleacher full of bouncers and crawlers. I don't know if i'm going to Reno this year - it sure was fun last year - and i'd like to - but the budget may have something to say about whether i walk around there by myself again.
