Can you post a screenshot of that? (Not that those can't be faked, mind you...)

I don't think shirozina would lie about something like this. Unless you're looking for something else in the screenshot?

I'd like to be able to point users from another forum, who have no idea whatsoever as to the credibility of any user here, to the screenshot.

Probably the best way to secure a perfect result (so's you know he's not mucking with the screenshot, as you alluded to above) would be to fill out the Capture one beta 4 feedback report.

Even better than a screenshot - here is the link;

Which, as far as I could learn from the Phase One website, is done through an URL that's launched from within the Capture One beta 4 software itself. Which I haven't installed. To do so would have been an option of course, but the issue is taken care of. Thank you.

At least we now know the name - could have been 6D, 5Ds etc

And it makes it highly likely that there are pre-production bodies out in the wild. Which in turn further solidifies the PMA08 introduction speculation.

The Capture one site is truly making reference to a 5DmkII.

Imo, this was a good way to get a free advertisement, and it worked perfectly...

They are referring to viral marketing / viral advertising. A very valid point, I have to admit. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_marketing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_marketing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stealth_marketing

This new nugget of information spreads like the proverbial wildfire on various photography boards and presto, both PhaseOne and Canon will get free PR as result of it.

I can assure everyone that I have no connection with either corporation other than as a customer/end user of their products. But then if I was planting a 'viral' ad I would deny it wouldn't I. But there would be no point not denying it either as by now it's probably doing the rounds on photo sites all over the net. Maybe Canon and Phase One should pay me for doing their PR - I'd better send them an invoice!

they'll give you the needed info when they leak it through the proper channels. i don't have time to speculate on its specs. i do know it will be an upgrade from the previous model. it will be 14bit. it will be FF. it will be a higher pixel count. self cleaning system. it will support live view. and of course improved metering and AF as each generation usually does. the obvious key words are bigger. better, and improved.

While it is interesting to see this in their popup menu, it probably isn't all that meaningful or all that big of a deal.

The designation on the popup doesn't necessarily tell us what the camera will be called. In the absence of a real name, this could simply how they chose to refer to it. (Sort of like in these forums, right? :-)

And, as others pointed out, the idea that a "5DII" might be coming isn't exactly a surprise.

But kudos to you for noticing this in their menu. That was fun.

Dan

Plausible deniability is such a nice thing

Could this be viral marketing? Yes. Then again, it could be an innocent mistake. Even if it is viral, it could have been left in the pull-down menu, to be discovered by an independent and observant user. It could have been whispered to you shirozina. But like you said, if it were, you would deny it.

End result? It has a lot of people talking about it. Good luck sending that invoice

Interesting. I was at a local dealer yesterday having a "Canon Expo". There were there with all the Canon equipment including several 1Ds Mark IIIs. When asked about the 5D Mark II, the Canon guy in charge said "not anytime soon". When he was asked about February, he didn't say anything but shook his head slightly to say "no" to one of the store employees. May be nothing or that he didn't know, but I sure got the impression that it was going to be awhile before getting anything. And it wasn't like they were trying to sell more 1Ds Mark IIIs, the store already has a list 100 long for it and not expecting that many anytime soon.

Not suprising considering how close-mouthed Canon has been in the past. Doesn't mean it's not in the hands of several beta-testers somewhere that have signed ND agreements.

I'd expect a "Canon Guy" to be particularly close-mouthed lest the company find out he leaked the info and can him.
