Thanks for the moral support Chris!

Every time I speak to CPS they tell me that the custom functions need tuning and that the 1D Mark 3 is fine although they acknowledge that photographers are having problems adjusting to it.

I listen to that, pick up a Mark 3, shoot a rugby game and the results are frankly cr4p. The following weekend I pick up my 1D2N, fit the same lens and the results are fantastic! I keep trying to remember this as every time I speak to CPS they make me feel like a cr4ppy photographer when all I want to do is complain about their product!

According to CPS they have the new 1.1.1 firmware and I can get it this week by dropping by.

Let us know the results - I haven't read a report on the official 1.1.1 release, everything's about the beta.

Oh man does it burn me to hear that them say the camera is fine but you have not learned how to use it yet...bunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a gutless way to respond. Sorry, but this just really gets me going...$4,500 and who knows how many missed shots. Ugh.

Shot football yesterday, soccer today, now going to go plant a tree...Red Maple...and leave the camera in the house for a while.

Kick it upstairs as far as you need too to get a refund. Find as good a used 1dm2 as you can. There's really got to be a defect somewhere along the line and we can't blame ourselves after doing a reasonable shuffling of the settings. I was going to be a buyer too but no rush with the frequency of issues with it. Good luck boys... Steve

When a camera is designed such that you need a pilots license to be able to get the thing to do what any other camera can do out of the box, then I say Canon have stuffed up big time and have been too clever by half.

It's like a car that's been set up so that it can give the fastest lap time, but that only possibly Michael Schumacher could ever master and the other 99.999999999% of mortals will crash it every time, because it's too twitchy. Hey but when it works it's unbeatable.

Sorry Canon, you've made a serious error and it's time to stop passing the buck.
I can hear the words of Mac Davis' classic song, even as I type

"Oh Lord it's hard to be humble,
when your camera is perfect in every way
I can't wait to look in the view finder
cause I get better pictures each day.
To own one is to love one
It's just a hell of a camera.
Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
but we've built the best camera we can."

Firstly, I have always hated Micheal Schumacher!! Secondly love your lyrics for Mac Davis's song!!
I'm sorry for all of that own this camera. I have been wanting one since it was even a whisper of a rumor!! But all the problems have stopped me in my tracks! I will not spend money that might at BEST be 50-50. Canon needs to admit the problem first, then fix the dammed thing. Once that happens all of us fence post sitter will lay our cash down!

So do you think I'm wise to wait, or should I just jump on the band wagon and hope they fix it?

If you don't need the AI-servo it's a great camera. It's better in every aspect as it's predecessor.

I wouldn't touch the 1D III with a 10' pole at this stage, unless you like Russian roulette.

Wait until the whole situation is sorted one way or another.

I bet the flower was moving so fast it was difficult to track in AI-Servo mode.

I am waiting for the 1D Mark III N, or I might switch to Nikon if they cannot get their act together.

Well I find triffids very difficult to photograph as they can move without warning.

How long after the Mark II was introduced did they release the N?

ooouch... I can't wait till the D3's come out and people start posting the real world photos with the D3, this will be the true test to jump ship (not that I would) if I remember right when the 1DM3 came out the photos online that were published looked pretty amazing to me as well, until the real world shooters start posting and commenting, this is when you need to make your decision.

I have been torn between getting my money back on my 1D3 and purchasing a 1D2n until canon gets there $hit together. Only problem... there are so many things to like about this camera it makes the decision hard to make.

AI servo problem (yep, thats a biggie), if this is cleared up in the upcoming firmware, this camera will rock! (I sure hope its soon).

I totally agree, with the AI-Servo problem sorted this camera will rock, even more than the 1D2N did!

Like you I am in the same situation, so very close to asking for my money back and even this is going to be nigh on impossible given that I have had it since July. I spoke at length to Canon today, discussing my post calibration troubles, I understand a new firmware, 1.1.2 is coming out shortly (next few weeks) though a beta version is available. If a beta version comes out and fixes the issue, fine I will be happy. However if Canon do nothing and simply release a 1D3N this is when I get seriously scared and want to return my current body. All in all a -expletive deleted- up situation and an impossible decision!

My cautious side says go for the refund however since the clocks go back soon and it is dark so much more, clean ISO 3200 shots and accurate AI-Servo in low light is much needed for what I do.

1D2 released 29/01/04, 1D2N released 29/08/05.

Now going for a shower after visiting drpreview to get that information!

I returned my last Mk III for a refund and am about to buy a 40D since I'm without a camera at the moment.

The precise moment my 40D is nonreturnable, the solution for the Mk III will be announced. I guess it's called "taking one for the team".

I think you are all correct, I will wait until the get the AI issues all sorted out. In the mean time I will use my 5d and look around for a replacement 1Dmk2. I just sold mine with the thought of picking up a mk3. UGH!!!

Seriously? You sold your 1DII to get a Mark III even with all the talk of AF issues? Brave soul.

Alistair, I feel for you. I had a 10D that Canon couldn't properly calibrate for the better part of a year and 6 trips. Over the 1st year of ownership, Canon had it at their facility longer than I had it in my possession. I was incredibly frustrated, and that was a much cheaper camera and the problem was simple and fixable. Sadly, I'm beginning to think Canon can't (or won't) fix the AF on the 1DIII. If you decide to work up the management food chain to get a refund, I wish you good luck. If the UK is anything like the US, that will be a real uphill battle.

If you can get a refund, and they fix the problems, then you can purchase a new one then, and you are way better off since you have 1DMk2n to carry you over. If you don't get a refund, and they don't fix the problem, then you are semi-screwed.

Just my opinion.

Damn good point Gene if you put it like that! Thanks
