My local camera shop (Arlington Camera) dropped the price on their 5Ds to $2299, down from $2699 last week. (on their website - haven't stopped by the retail store)

Ran into a 5D display at Best Buy, the salesman told me they sold one display body for $1499 last weekend as an end of life item. They had a display 24-105 kit, but the rear command dial wasn't working and it looked pretty rough overall.

Clearly no new camera coming soon, but perhaps Canon is getting ready to lower the MSRP rather than run a rebate program?

Does Canon really control MSRP or is that a per store thing? Maybe they are trying to get stock moving with probably a lot of interest being on the newer models... at $1499 I would have bought two. $2299 is about $300 less than I paid, so to me that's a great buy also. Interesting.

B&H also dropped the price. Maybe Canon has a surprise for us and wants to bring out the mkII a little earlier.

Those pricing drops are nice, maybe there is something coming up. Dear god I hope it doesn't suck.

interesting.. I heard about the Best Buy $1499 deal, but couldn't find one locally, in the LA area. I checked Arlington Cameras website and it's true, $2299, which is cheaper than B&H.. and just about everyone else.

The Canadians got their rebates this week, again a double rebate on the 5d, which is the only SLR being rebated. Could this mean a 5d replacement soon? Is Canon telling their retailers to move their existing inventory? Can we expect similar double rebates within a couple weeks? I hope so!

The Canadian 'rebates' are a total rip off. We pay way more for the same lens here and the Can $ is now par with the US $.
Example:

The 70-200 F4L IS is $1499 at Henry's, take off that whole $ 100 rebate and you still can't match the $1069 that BH sell the lens for.

I'll be taking a drive south to buy any more gear, until Canadian retailers stop ripping us off.

Yes the price is coming down on this camera nearly every month. The shop that I use takes about $ 3100 for the 5D + 24-105 lens. I sold mine two months ago but I will probably buy a new 5D in a couple of months.

The Euro is worth a lot more than both the US or Canadian dollar. But we pay more in Euro than you do in dollar

Canadian prices are way out of line. You can order over the net, pay the taxes at the border and still save lots of cash. Just don't except shipment from UPS or Fedex. USPS is the way to go. And I suspect a lot of people are doing it because I'm waiting for a few things that are being shipped from the USA and they are VERY late. Customs is probably swamped with parcels right now.

Decrease price of the 5D might have something to do with the Nikon D300 camera coming out in November. Even though the two cameras are quite different ( FF versus crop, high speed versus slow ), they are in the midrange price wise. Maybe competition is finally starting to wake up Canon.

Price drops are store matters. Stores can cut profits on items just to engender interest in a particular department (cut prices on any or all cameras to bring more people into the camera department to buy accessories with greater profit margins) or into the store.

I have not seen any reliable indication that Canon Inc ever lowers wholesale prices. I suspect, rather, that stores charge a hefty profit margin initially and substantially lower it later on.

Canon Inc is, of course, aware of when they will release another camera, so I'd expect they control production of the current model well enough to ensure that they don't have old model cameras on the shipping dock when the new model is released.

I got same price about year ago after rebates. It seem they are dropping before fall rebate and than come back to normal right before Oct 15.

I hope this isn't the case. I'm not exactly sure how the rebates work for the stores, but it seems that Canon is the one that eats the costs of the rebates, not the stores.

I also owned a 5d, sold it for a 1ds2 upgrade, been missing that 5d like mad so I bought another one and sold the 1ds2. 5d is such a killer camera.

I would guess the price drop is more closely associated with increased competition than from an impending model release--which is good, because the 5d2 should also reflect a lower price.

I also owned a 5d, sold it for a 1ds2 upgrade, been missing that 5d like mad so I bought another one and sold the 1ds2. 5d is such a killer camera.


I really like it as a small walk around camera when I travel. It's a great combo together with the 1DmkII or mkIII.

I've been saying for some time that one way Canon could respond to the D300 would be with a 12MP FF body in the near-$2000 range. They _could_ do this with the 5D, and there are other options as well.

Clearly a 5D does not have all of the features of the D300, but it does leverage Canon's lead in FF sensor bodies in the same price range and would allow them to continue to sell the least expensive FF body. For many buyers - though not all - the FF sensor might be more important than burst mode speed, etc.

Representatives for Canon Inc have said that the 5D is for a certain niche of Japanese amateurs who want image quality over performance speed or professional-level robustness, and it was that niche Canon Inc had in mind when they created the 5D. By description, these sound like the kind of people who would be doing bonsai, if they weren't doing photography.

Well, Canon USA markets the 24x36mm cameras to wedding and portrait photographers (the 5D) and high-end commercial photographers (the 1Ds)--people who would otherwise be using medium format cameras.

So as far as Canon Inc and Canon USA is concerned, such things as burst mode speed aren't important to the markets they're pointing 24x36mm cameras toward.

The UK just got the rebates, starting 30.9.07 'till the end of the year. A 5d is now £1300 ($2600), down from £1600 !!
