12/14 argument? Who is arguing? Are you saying that Canon has in the past denied a need for more than 12 bit A/D conversion?

Obviously 16384 tone levels (2**14) vs. 4096 tone levels (2**12) will make a big difference. It remains to be seen how visible a difference there is between 16384 tone levels (14 bit) and 65536 tone levels (16 bit). I expect you are past the point of diminishing returns.

Don't forget that at 14 bit you are moving around and processing a lot more data. I suspect that at the time of the development of the 1Ds2 and 1Ds that this was a much more challenging design issue than today. Thus the 12 bit.

Hopefully the 12/14/16 bit augument is over also. Here is what Canon has to say. (markering hype on)

After all the nay sayers, Canon has finally admitted that 14 bits is better and one of their other papers said that 16 bit was planned for a future camera.

tHE MILKING GOES ON!

Kind of off-topic, but I wonder how how much retailers will charge for the leftover new 1Ds MkII bodies when the 1DS MkIII finall starts shipping?

Edited: I thought I got a great deal on a new one on eBay, but apparently the seller didn't set a reserve and wasn't happy with the final price, so he's claiming it was a fraudulent auction on his account as a way to back out of the deal. Right, as if a scammer would make the terms LOCAL PICKUP ONLY and payment via cashier's check. Please...
